Coastal Scents Cosmetics: Safe to use!

Hi everyone! Some good news to pass along in this blog. I'm not sure what started this buzz, but I've been getting comments and messages on my YouTube channel about Coastal Scents palettes... some people say they contain lead and are unsafe to use. I felt the need to look into this, and have received a response from the company. This came in an email directly from the Coastal Scents company:

"The palettes and hot pots are manufactured in accordance with FDA
Our products are safe to use and pass all FDA regulations. However, we can only speak for our own production and for all of our products that are shipped out from our warehouse. Any products that look the same or are claimed to be similar as Coastal Scents palettes (like the ones sold on eBay) are out of our control and could be manufactured by guidelines other then FDA."
-Coastal Scents

What is the FDA?
The FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration, which is the basically the governing body of safety in the U.S. cosmetics industry, among other things. Products that are sold in the United States must comply with FDA guidelines to be put on the market. I think Coastal Scents makes a good point that even though some palettes might look exactly the same, they could still be a knock-off and aren't necessarily safe.

Still Have Questions?
Perhaps this post leaves you with further questions for Coastal Scents. If you still don't feel assured that the products are safe, I encourage you to contact the company directly. Visit, and click the "Contact Us" link to ask any questions. I got a very prompt response to mine.

Cosmetics Safety Database
I also did some investigating on my own. There is a fantastic cosmetics safety resource on the web by the Environmental Working Group called the Cosmetic Safety Database: This is a phenomenal resource if you have any questions about a particular brand, product, or ingredient. I will likely use this as a resource for any future reviews I do. You can also sign up for email updates on cosmetics & ingredient safety, which I did- there's a place to do that on the left hand side of the page.

CSD on Coastal Scents
Ingredients on the Cosmetic Safety Database (CSD) are given a numerical rank in terms of their safety. 0-2 means low hazard, 3-6 is moderate hazard, and 7-10 is high hazard. If you look up Coastal Scents on the site- it has no items marked as a hazard of any sort. Perhaps it's because the site doesn't know much about the brand yet- but the fact that nothing negative has been reported here is a good thing. And there is SO MUCH information on the products in many other brands, it makes me feel like the Environmental Working Group has done their homework, and simply may not have had negative findings. In addition, you can see "Company Policies". I'm able to see that Coastal Scents recently signed the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics"... According to the site, this means...

"The Compact for Safe Cosmetics aims to improve the safety of products made by companies who sign on, and to ensure that companies provide the fullest information possible to help consumers make informed decisions about the products they buy.", Compact for Safe Cosmetics

As a company who complies with this compact- you're supposed to comply with... "Ingredient standards recommended or mandated by national health agencies overseeing cosmetics safety, including in the U.S., Japan, Canada, and the E.U." I take this as a good sign for Coastal Scents, since they have chosen to be part of this voluntary group.

One last note: the cosmetics database also allows you to search any specific ingredient and it will tell you what the risk level is. Coastal Scents lists ALL of their products ingredients on their website, so you can investigate any ingredients you're concerned about.

I hope this is helpful, and puts you at ease!
Have a great day, it's almost Friday!

Seamless Eyeshadow Blending + Brush Reviews

Hey everyone! How is Tuesday treating you? This morning when I was getting ready for work- I was applying a dark matte brown shade to my eye crease- but those matte shades aren't always the easiest to blend out- and when you do, you have to be careful.

Back in the good ole days, I might have just dipped into more of an eye shadow shade to "blend" the look. My mindset was more focused on applying MORE color as a means to blending- as opposed to simply blending. And that big fluffy tapered blending brush in my collection? It didn't provide a lot of control so I'd never reach for it. As I've leared over the years- a bare blending brush can work wonders to smooth out a shade without adding anything extra. Working in small circular motions can buff out a color in your crease/outer V to the point where you can't quite tell where it stops and where a highlight color begins.

*First, as I described earlier, these fluffy brushes can be used alone to blur the lines of a darker crease shade
*You can use these to apply a highlight shade to the browbone while overlapping a darker crease shade to further blend the line
*These brushes tend to be a bit larger and can cover a lot of surface area on the eye. If you just want a natural wash of color all over- these brushes could be a nice option for that too.

Left to Right:
1.) Smashbox #10 Crease Brush: $28
This brush is the largest blending brush I have- and it's so big I rarely use it to apply color. It's main purpose for me is to use bare to blend out a darker shade, and for that- it's great. It's also very pricey- I got it as part of a gift set. Smashbox does have incredible brushes though- and for a special gift- this might be a nice item to add to your list.
2.) Sephora Professionnel Rounded Crease Brush #13: $17
This is probably one of my favorite brushes out of everything I own. It's super soft, dense, and versatile. Makes an awesome blending brush, but is just small enough to where you feel you have enough control applying color with it- and it's nice for applying highlight shades too. Oh did I mention SOFT? this brush rules!
3.) ELF Blending Eye Brush: $1
I'll admit, I haven't given this brush rave reviews in the past. It's not as dense or soft as any of the other brushes, however, if you're really trying ot stay on a budget and want to work on your technique- this might be something good to look into. It's a decent size to use bare for blending purposes, but I'm not a huge fan of using this brush to apply shadow. For just a buck?! Why not give it a try when you make your next ELF order.
4.) Glam Couture Chisel Crease Brush: $10
You'll notice by the picture- this brush doesn't flare out as much as some of the others. It's most similar to the Sephora brush- only it tapers to more of an actual tip. While being soft and dense, it has a nice stiffness to it as well. Of all of these brushes it's the one that you could best use to actually apply shadow to the crease with and have great control. But because it is so soft- I wanted to include it as an option for blending. You could use it with nothing on it and get a wonderful buffed-out look. Not a bad pricetag either!
Thanks so much for checking out this blog, and I hope you learned a thing or two about blending, as well as some brushes that make the job so much easier!

Man Beauty: Erasing Shine

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a good Thursday. I don't do nearly enough beauty articles/videos dealing with guys- since I happen to know I have a decent amount of male followers/subscribers. Plus- I live with one! Which brings up a relatively uninteresting, but relevant story. Earlier this week when Tyler stopped in between class and work, I was talking to him and noticed how shiny his forehead is. He has classic combination skin... dry to normal on the cheeks and oily on the T-zone. Before he left for work I say, "wait, just a second!!" and I skitter off to my makeup room, which he knows can't be good, but before he can tell me to stop, I arrive with a fantastic and cheap product from E.L.F. Cosmetics called Shine Eraser.

These are only ONE DOLLAR on, or select retailers where ELF is sold. They are just oil blotting sheets- these very thin, tissue paper like sheets that you press wherever you're oily or sweaty- and it picks it up without packing on more makeup. Plus they come in a 50 pack! The package says they have "micro-sebum absorbers" that instantly depart excess oil on contact, and also Green Tea Extract.

Not only are they good for guys who don't wear makeup, but even those in broadcasting who do- and have to spend lots of time under bright lights that inevitably cause more oil and shine. Blotting with these keeps you from having to cake on more makeup- and that's something I'm sure lots of ladies would enjoy as well!

After Tyler used these- his skin looked fresh, less greasy, and just a lot better! These blotting sheets are only a buck, and pretty much the best deal around. But if you don't want to order online, I know Clean & Clear sells some oil blotting sheets in pretty much any drugstore you set foot in.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog, and have a great day!!

The Results Are In...

LCD Text Generator at

Hey Everyone!
The results are in! After very careful consideration I've come up with not 5, but 8 contest winners! The folks for Crest PR were nice enough to accomodate the additional winners, so I'm thrilled that 8 people will get to try out Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal! Woohoo!

In addition, I'm thrilled that people will now have so many ideas for their prom makeup as they look through the video responses. While I picked 8 winners- there were so many fantastic submissions. I really don't like to set up a lot of rules in terms of makeup... I follow the philosophy that there aren't concrete right and wrongs- but rather it's about creativity and what works for the individual. So the entries I chose as "winners" were those that appealed to me in overall effect. I didn't want to set up a strict set of rules for everyone to follow- you'll notice some videos take you step-by-step, some are more descriptive, etc. I judged on the finished look!

What I considered while judging the entries...
-The finished look and overall effect
-Is the look appropriate for the prom-going age group?
-Would I have wanted to do this look for my own prom? (years ago haha)
-Overall technique and aesthetic appeal

What I DID NOT consider while judging the entries...
-Professional quality of photos
-Editing ability
-Kind comments toward me and my channel
-How cheap/expensive the products were that were used
-Presentation of the look (could be tutorial style, walking thru the products- as long as I know what you used and you show the finished look, it's ok)

Dramatic Navy Smokey Eye

Hey everyone! Some of you love super colorful looks, some enjoy natural looks, but as I've revealed through some of my "Questions of the Week" MANY of you love a good smokey eye. That's what I'd like to show you in this "Eye of the day" post :D It's very dramatic, not for everyday use- but would be great for a night out on the town or a big event. Enjoy!

-Apply Too Faced Shadow insurance as a primer all over lids

-Apply a deep blue matte shadow lightly all over the lid (I used the blue on the bottom row, 3 shades from the right in my Coastal Scents 42 color Double Stack Matte shadow & blush palette)
-Use black shade (I used Glam Couture pressed shadow in Night in Vegas- a sparkly black) to develop the outer V shape.
-Use a rich matte black to further deepen the outer half of the crease (I used the black in the corner of the CS palette) Blend, blend, blend!
-Highlight with a light shimmery shade- I used my Coastal Scents Hot Pot single in S03. I also used a very light touch of that on the inner part of the lid.
-Line the eyes... I used Revlon Colorstay liquid liner in Blackest Black for the top lash line, and the pencil liner in black on the bottom. I topped the bottom liner with the deep blue matte shadow we used earlier.
-Apply false lashes... This is a MUST to achieve the effect of this look. I used Ardell Invisiband Demi Luvies (Available at Sally Beauty Supply). Doesn't give you a natural look, but a fun one!
-On the lips... I used Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Metallic Seduction. I then dotted a light nude shimmer shade in the center of my lips for fullness- sorry I can't remember the exact shade I used there! Any light shimmery gloss will do :D

Coastal Scents 42 Color Double Stack Matte Shadow & Blush Palette (blush is underneath)

Glam Couture eyeshadow in Night in Vegas, Coastal Scents Hot Pot single in S03, Revlon Colorstay pencil liner in black, Revlon Colorstay liquid liner in blackest black.

Want to try Mauve? Try this!

(ELF Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15 in Mauve Luxe)

Hey! Hope you're having an awesome day. Mine was pretty fun- did a story at an orchard where there were tons of strawberry plants, peach trees, apple trees... not to mention a gorgeous view. Despite some cold temps in southern IL- the fruit is surviving LOL- I'm sure you all really cared about that. :) Now to the task at hand- introducing you to this great lip gloss I just discovered from ELF!

I knew I liked the Super Glossy Lip Shine with it's light grape scent long ago... but I pretty much stuck to the pink & nude shades. I'd never tried Mauve Luxe, perhaps because I was scared by the somewhat dark shade on thier website. When I saw it in person at a Meijer store over the weekend- I knew I needed to try it. Plus it was only a DOLLAR!

It's a gorgeous deep mauve shade, with a hint of brown- and also a touch of gold shimmer. As you can tell by this pic below- it's not as dark as the website picture implies- so don't be scared of it! This is a totally wearable shade and it's definitely worth checking out! Just visit

(only wearing the gloss- nothing else. probably should've worn liner LOL oh well!)

Thanks for stopping by!

On the Road for Easter Weekend!

Hey everyone!

I'm doing this blog on location from my sister's house... we traveled to Champaign, IL for Easter! We've been having a great time just hanging out and doing what we've always done... cooking, making up songs, playing with cats, and general goofiness. Tyler came with me, and my mom and dad met us here as well. Of course my sister Kelly's (a.k.a. Pup's) husband Jeff was there as well! :D

Me & Pup! She calls me Poof... just the names we've used since I was a little kid! I'm honestly not sure what prompted them... just sort of those nonsensical words you use that morph into nicknames.

Pup lives in a beautiful area with lots of trees, flowers, and wildlife. This wasn't exactly wildlife- but I thought it was appropirate for Easter!!

Flowers in bloom!

While we were out and about having fun- we also had the chance to do a little shopping and shoot a video! My sister joined me to share a haul, some of her favorite (and not so favorite) products- and a special surprise! Check it out!

Special Event Beautification!

Hey everyone!

Yesterday I was honored to take part in a special event- the Celebrity Waiter Gala. It benefits the local Child Advocacy Center- which does all sorts of things to help abused and neglected children. Lots of local leaders are in attendance, and as a waiter, It was my task to make sure my assigned table had what they needed, get them drinks, and make sure they're having a good time. It was fun! Myself and about a dozen others got dropped off in a limo, and walked in on the red carpet- so fun!! Along with a great meal, there were special challenges throughout the night. Definitely funny to see some of the people I interview on a regular basis in a professional setting getting dared to sing karyoke and dance!

With Tyler, my date!

With Lauren, a reporter at another TV station :)

Getting ready for an event like this-- or for proms, weddings, etc... can take LOTS of work! You want to look your best, and when you're doing it all yourself like I did- it can take some time. Fortunately for me, I love the whole process of getting ready for stuff like this- so I thought I'd share it with you!!

(I found this dress for $25 at Wet Seal)

  • Get clean! When you shower- consider things like whether or not you'll be using a self-tanner that day- you'll want to exfoliate beforehand in the shower. Also- doing a deep conditioning treatment on your hair (I use Aussie 3 Minute Miracle) may help your hair be more manageable once it's time to style it.
  • Do your nails! This is something you could do the night before too- but of course you lessen the chances of messing it up if you just wait until close before the event. I did it the morning of my event. I kept it simple, using a color that coordinated with my outfit, but also one that I knew would dry quickly and not take too much time. I put Revlon nail enamel in Cherry Crush on my fingers & toes.
  • Get a bright smile! This is something you may want to think about in the weeks leading up to the event- but if you regularly whiten your teeth with Whitestrips every couple of days- just go ahead and use the strips on the big day as well. Allow yourself half an hour for them to stay in. I like Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal- they stay in so well, I almost forget I'm wearing them!
  • Get tan! I regularly use a gradual sunless tanner- Dove Energy Glow, but for this event I wanted to have an even more sunkissed look. There is a product from DuWop that I absolutely love- called Revolution. It's a body bronzer moisturizer- but it also has sunscreen- SPF 15. I put it on my arms and legs, and had Tyler slather some on my back. It take a little while to dry, so I suggest doing this the morning of your event. It won't come off till the next time you shower. I just love this, because haven't we all had those times when we look at our skin and think, man I look pale! This stuff gives an awesome, and most importantly, healthy tan glow. This product won an Allure Editor's Choice Award.
  • Get your makeup on! This is something you can start strategizing about as soon as you get your outfit. For my event, I knew I would be surrounded by those who are used to watching me on the news- so I basically took that look and kicked it up a notch with some slightly more dramatic false lashes and brigher lips. False lashes are a SUPER easy way to make your look more glamorous... to learn more check out my false eyelash tutorial.
  • Hair time! This is something else you should be thinking about before your event. Be aware that if you're trying something new on yourself for the very first time- it might not exactly go as planned! Since this was a big event for me, I wanted to go with a style that I've mastered using velcro rollers. Here's the link to my video tutorial on that: Velcro Roller Tutorial.

Online Makeup Shopping- Shipping Information

Hi everyone!
I recently received a great question in my email from a loyal subscriber, Leslie. She was wondering what customer service and shipping speed were like for several different online makeup retailers. This really isn't something that gets addressed too often in videos, so I thought I would give you all a brief rundown of my experiences with different companies- so if you decide to place an order as well... you'll know what to expect! :)

Probably has the slowest shipping. It can take a couple of weeks to get to you. At one point (through an error at my post office) I didn't get an order so I called customer service and they quickly sent me another order. So I'm pleased with their customer service- but don't plan on getting your ELF stuff right away after you place the order.
Also- early on when I was ordering from ELF- it seemed like some of their items would be out of stock and- it wouldn't show on their website so you'd expect to receive them... but then they just wouldn't come and there would be a note on the packing sheet. That was kind of frustrating, but it hasn't happened to me in a long time. A really cool thing ELF does- they'll offer a free magazine subscription when you order more than a certain amount... currently it's only 15 bucks! They say what magazine they're giving you on the front page... I've received subscriptions of Glamour and Shape!

Cherry Culture:
I really haven't had to deal one on one with their customer service, but I haven't heard anthing negative about them. Their shipping is kind of in the middle- it might take a week for the products to get to you, but when they do, they are very nicely packaged so the makeup isn't getting tossed around in a box.
I like how you're able to see on their website what's out of stock before you place the order. Plus they give you free lip gloss with every order! :) You'll also receive FREE shipping if you spend more than $40!

Coastal Scents:
Awesome shipping and overall customer service experience. The stuff comes VERY quickly after you place the order-and since many of their beauty products are palettes- it's important that they're packaged very carefully so things aren't popping out/breaking... and they definitely take that into consideration.
Brushes I've ordered from there have come individually wrapped in tissue paper & bubble wrap... You'll occasionally get a free sample tossed in there too! Great company.

Everyday Minerals:
This company has FANTASTIC shipping/customer service as well. They pay so much attention to packaging your items with plenty of padding- I don't think it's possible for the items to break in any way! Plus- the items come so fast. I've never had a problem with anything being out of stock. Also- they'll occasionally throw in some free samples!
Also- you can get a free sample kit for free (just pay shipping)... and you'll get 5 mini jars of different products- whatever you choose! You have the option of trying 3 foundations, a concealer, and a blush.

Bee Luscious:
This company prides itself on fantastic customer service, and I've had an excellent experience as well. It seems they really take an interest in every individual customer, so if you have questions about products- you'll be able to get them answered by someone who knows their stuff.

Items are always packed in bubble wrap and I've never received any broken or damaged items. The company is currently offering 25% off your entire shopping cart order... so that's awesome!

Thanks for checking out my blog everyone, and have a grea weekend!

Coastal Scents Custom Palette Swatches

Hey guys!
A heads up about a brand new product on the Coastal Scents website: Custom palettes! You can get the 12-pan palette like you see here- or a 4-pan palette with a mirror. They come with removable metal pans that you can easily take out- and then pop in these magnetized shadow pans. They're called HOT POTS and there are are 66 shades! These shadows are AWESOME quality and many are different from those in the other large pre-made CC palettes. These are the same size as MAC, Milani, and ELF singles (to name a few- there may be other brands that I'm unaware of at the moment that would also fit).

For more info on shadows, pricing, and purchasing:

-Hot Pot shadows are made up of a series of letters & numbers.
-B= Blush (although I still use them as shadow)
-M= Matte
-S= Shimmer & Satin

Here's a look at my palette...
the shades are listed below in the order they appear in the palette

S-03................ S-07................... S-32.................M-01

B-05............... S-38.................... S-13................ S-10
M-22.............. S-35.................... S-28 ...............M-06

(Please excuse the poor picture quality on these swatches. I'm not sure why my camera wasn't cooperating- the sets of 3 correspond with the vertical rows in the palette. I tried to put them in so these sets of 3 would work with one another)

S-03, B-05, M-22

S-07, S-38, S-35

S-32, S-13, S-28

M-01, S-10, M-06

For more information on this palette and other new products- check out my recent haul video!

Have a great day!!
