"Yuk, goopy. Are you really going to put that on?"
-A direct quote from my husband Tyler when I showed him the Double Twist Mascara wand.

Could the same company that brought us revolutionary products like Colorstay Foundation and incredible eyeliners also deliver something completely ineffective and difficult to use? Unfortunately my friends, the answer is yes.

In my opinion, Revlon made a big mistake with its Double Twist mascara. As one who enjoys the rubber brush mascaras for their precision, and traditional mascara brushes for their volume- I thought this would be the best of both worlds- a mascara wand that incorporates both rubber bristles and traditional bristles... claiming to give you all the advantages of both varieities. I trotted up to the checkout at my local Walgreens so hopeful... but ended up really disappointed.
..........
Double Twist comes in a short stocky, overall cute red tube. The brush is tapered at the tip, and also where it connects on to the wand. As you can probably see from the pictures, it's that tapered area near the wand that ends up with an incredible amount of mascara buildup. In any mascara, there is a mechanism inside that basically cleans off the mascara wand as you pull it out. In my experience- sometimes they pull off far too much of the product... but with this- I felt like it wasn't doing anything. Not only the brush, but the wand itself had an excess of product- most wands I use come out totally clean. In the picture below- you can see that you're left with a large amount of goop to contend with right at the mouth of the tube. Yeah that's real fun to mess with after a frustrating application process.
So how can you get a decent application with this stuff? Well you can wipe off the excess product with a tissue, then very slowly and carefully apply it to your lashes, then take a separate lash comb to take away the clumps... but who has time for all those steps every single morning? It was so hard for me to get this on my lashes without depositing tons of product. After my best attempt, my lashes looked thick alright- but also incredibly weighed down. The curl was gone and they were just kind of there. Obviously thick, and not cute.
..........
It's important to note that in a previous question of the week (which had gotten around 900 reponses) the vast majority of those who answered said the biggest flaw a mascara can have is being clumpy. So therefore- resist the urge to pickup this pretty red tube of mascara. If you're in the market for a nice drugstore mascara try L'oreal HIP, CoverGirl Volume Exact, or L'oreal Lash Out to name a few.
Thanks for stopping by the blog, and have a great day!

Ewwww it looks gross. Im not a big fan of their mascaras. Although i do like their 3D Extreme. It fans out my lashes very well but it could be clumpy at times.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up!! It looks yucky!!!
ReplyDeleteYikes, that looks awful. Thanks for the review, knowing myself I would have probably picked it up at some point since Revlon is my favorite drugstore brand -- not doing that now.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I was debating on whether to review this or not- it's just REALLY bad. I don't know that I can find something even remotely positive to say about it to soften the blow. I love almost everything else they make, and this was an amazing idea- to combine the two brush styles- but yowza it is goop city.
ReplyDeleteThe same thing happened to me with the Revlon 3D mascara and I wrote them and complained about it. I think the little ring is missing at the top of the tubes on many of their products. They need to know they have some severe design flaws. No one wants to pay $10 for a mascara that has to go in the garbage.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad! That brush really looked cool. :(
ReplyDeleteTheir Fabulash is like that too! I love the HIP Mascara!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't trust Revlon w/ their mascaras. The 3D mascara was crap. Threw it away.
ReplyDeleteYep, I tried it too and it was horrible. I did a review of it on my blog and I looked at some other blogs that had reviewed it and no one likes it. What were they thinking!?!
ReplyDeleteI think this was an attempt to throw a mascara on the market and see what happens. Obviously they didn't think much about it. I don't know if your's had an internal problem... Some mascara's can do that due to temperature changes. The one's I want to try are the new Maybelline Pulse Perfection, and Loreal Telescopic Explosion.
ReplyDeleteAww... that's too bad... I wanted to try this mascara, altough I'm not a big fan of the Revlon mascaras.
ReplyDeleteSame thing happened to me with Revlon's 3D mascara, plus it was very clumpy! I would recommend returning all makeup products you're unhappy with, Revlon takes a hit on returned used makeup (at least I think they do). I never keep makeup if it just doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteI was was so hopeful for their new mascara...guess I won't be trying this one.
Ciao Emily,
ReplyDelete"Yuk, goopy. Are you really going to put that on?"
Ha Ha Ha that was so funny from Tylor... I really had to laugh when I read his quote.
Love your reviews... keep up the great work.
Have a great day.

Gotta give that tube a toss. Good to know. Thanks for the 411. Hmmm, do you think you might have gotten a reject tube? Maybe you could take it back and try the same brand/type.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new reader of your blog and I'm getting lots of good info. Thanks!
Ugh I completely agree I was so disappointed with this mascara. It was so messy and annoying to apply, grr Revlon. Lol
ReplyDeleteUh oh that's not fun. I was on the look out for a new mascara so it's good to know not to get that! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnd even if you have the time to take all the steps .. it's still a big waste of product when you have to whipe it off. :(
ReplyDeleteWow, that looks terrible. I haven't seen that particular mascara before. Is anyone else not digging the packaging? It looks like something from the early 90's... weird.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had seen your blog before I went out and bought this mascara. It is the most clumpy mascara I have ever boughten. What a waste of money. I learned my lesson with this one though....look for reviews before shelling out the cash....
ReplyDeleteWOW! Thanks for this review I was thinking about buying this mascara but after seeing those picture it totally changed my mind..THNX :-D
ReplyDeleteMine looked the same way, big gobs of yuck! I had high hopes for this one but it was a total waste of money
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly what mine looked like, a big glob of yuck! I had high hopes for this one but it was a total waste of money!
ReplyDeleteSame thing happened to me! I called Revlon (1-800-473-8566) and filed a complaint, the company needs to know that this product is a total failure. They're sending me gift certificates...
ReplyDeleteI second it all. I bought this thinking it would be the best of both worlds - what a let down! Clump, clump, gluey and more clump! And my lashes didn't get any more length than with any other ordinary mascara. Stay clear.
ReplyDeleteI actually really like this mascera. It is very clumpy in the bottle and on the brush but once applied my lashes have never been so full and long looking.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had read your blog before buying this. I was like "what the?" when I pulled it out of the tube. When I tried it at the make up counter it looked really good and was not clumpy/gooey when I pulled it out of the tube. I tried wearing mine (which was gooey and clumpy as soon as I pulled it out of the tube), and the freaking mascara got into my eyeball!!! I was freaking out I swear I thought of suing them of something, LOL. And when I tried dabbing the brush with tissue, the tissue was stuck on the brush! Revlon seriously needs to pull this product out of the market, like pronto.

ReplyDeleteI bought Revlon Double Twist mascara before I read any online reviews and had the same experience as everyone else. I called Revlon's customer service dept because I thought my tube must have been faulty. The lady who took my call was very professional; she confirmed it's too thick, and immediately offered to replace it with another (different) mascara. Apparently it's been withdrawn from sale, but many department stores still have it on their shelves. After talking with customer service I'll keep buying Revlon products. I'm in Australia, so not sure what they're doing in other countries.
