The Evolution of "Party Hair"

Hey Guys!

These days I get about as many hair questions as I do questions about makeup. I got a lot of questions about the above look that was posted in my Pink & Black eyeshadow tutorial, so I thought it was important to address a style that has sort of become my signature look over the years. For lack of a better name, I'm calling it "party hair"- since that's sort of what it makes me think of when I look at it. Although it's a look that works for pretty much any occasion in my book. It's characterized by loose wavy curls and volume in the crown. Curls are generally directed back and away from the face- as if they were just blown back.

Now that I've come up with a ten minute way to do it just using a curling iron and hairspray- I thought it was high time to post a video about it! So I hope you get a chance to check it out. This is also a look I've done with rollers- and I'll have videos about that coming up soon as well. For now- here's a look back at the style that I've used SO much over the years...

Party hair really started back in college. Here's me and my best friend Beth after getting ready for our senior formal for our sorority. (shout-out to all the Pi Phi's out there!) Here there was more curl- but not necessarily so much volume, and I didn't work the side bangs so much.

Here's an example of more sleek party hair- very shiny and framing the face. Curls around the face are directed back- still not tons of heighth in the crown in this pic .

This is official party hair! haha. Lots of volume in the crown, utilizing the side bangs and sweeping them back. Natural and loose curls around the shoulders.

Here's party hair when rollers were used- curls are a bit tighter and there's more lift around the sides of the face. Rollers usually help the curl last longer in my fine hair.

A classic example of me using party hair at the office! Generally I pull half of it around when I'm on camera so there's not a whole ton of hair showing. Overall- a look that's dressy, sexy, and fun- but you can take the party anywhere you want!

Favorite Lip Plumpers

Hey guys! Just last night I posted a video on my lip plumper collection- and reviewed them at the same time. I did it using the red-yellow-green dot system so you can see exactly what I think of each one I have. (I did an ELF review a long time ago like that and many of you enjoyed how straight-forward it was).

Celebrity Inspired Looks

Hey everyone! How's it going? I have to start this entry with a shout-out to my Mom, Jackie- it's her birthday today! Wow I'm so glad it's Friday. With all the wild weather we've been having- I've been having to wake up even earlier than usual to dig my Jeep out of the snow. I need a break! Tomorrow a couple of Tyler's sisters are coming down to visit so that should be fun! I'll have to post some pictures of our adventures in a future entry. Anyway- on with the blog...

I'm considering doing some celebrity-inspired looks. (either as FOTD's or tutorials)... It may not necessarily be copying the exact look on a picture- but just capturing the overall makeup style that the celeb uses...but who knows- sometimes it's easier to just duplicate what's in a picture. I'll also probably do a similar hairstyle. Anyway- I'm going to post a few pics of ones I'm considering, and I really want to hear your feedback- are there any others you think would be fun for me to try? Kim Kardashian: Photo courtesy- Official Kim Kardashian website. I love this look! It's so clean, yet smokey and dramatic. I like the lip color almost as much as the eyes too.


Angelina Jolie: This look would include Angelina's signiture cat eye. The rest of the eye makeup and face would be pretty natural. I'd most likely use some lip plumper haha :)



Megan Fox: There's probably no way this look will come off the same way on me- my eye color is so much darker. Still, I love the lip shade and thick lashes- and her eyebrows are great too.


Ashley Judd: Quite often my YouTube viewers compare me to her- I'm not sure if I see it, but it's an awesome compliment! I love her hair here and the really soft but kind of smokey eye look.

Robin Meade: I couldn't leave out my TV News beauty inspiration- Robin! She's pretty much what I craft my day-to-day look after, but still- that's a look that may be interesting to some in a tutorial format. Part of what makes Robin so pretty is her personality :)

Paint Brushes for the Face? Oh yes!

Hey everyone! Well I made it to work today! Definitely needed to kick the jeep into four wheel drive to make it out of the driveway, but got to work safe and sound. We had several inches of pure sleet... so pretty much every school and business was closed. It was kind of exciting during the newscast though!

So in this entry I wanted to tell you about the Loew Cornell brushes. They're art brushes, available at stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and some varieties can even be found at Wal-Mart. They're very inexpensive, but thanks to a number of makeup gurus on YouTube... I've realized they can be great for applying makeup (primarily eye makeup) and even compare to some high end brushes from brands like MAC! omg.

The brushes that have often been recommended are these with the light bristles. They're known as Maxine's Mop brushes. The handles are quite long, but are a pretty shade of purple. The bristles are also very soft! I'll just go from left to right and tell you what each brush can be used for...



3/4 Maxine's Mop: This is a really unique size... I don't have any makeup brushes of this size, but I find that it's nice for setting your under-eye concealer with if you like more full coverage. It's just the right size to fit under your eye while taking care of a large amount of space at once.



1/2 Maxine's Mop: This brush can function as a large eyeshadow brush. It can give you a nice all over wash of color. If you like to lay down a light neutral shade from lid to brow bone before you start blending in deeper shades, you'd enjoy this brush.



3/8 Maxine's Mop: I like using this brush to pack on color all over my lid. It's a great size for doing that and the slightly rounded shape makes it easy to sort of push the color up into the crease as well. Great when blending one color into the next on your lid.



1/4 Maxine's Mop: This is probably my favorite brush of the bunch. After I put a color all over my lid, I'll use this to maybe pack on a darker shade on the outer half of the lid, or to help me create that outer V shape. It can also be nice for dragging color under the eye for a smokey liner look.



Next I want to tell you about the brown nylon brushes sold in packages. These are also quite affordable, and you get a variety of shapes and sizes. There are different sets available, but generally some would make great liner brushes, others might be nice for cream shadows. Overall- these brown nylon brushes work well for cream-based products, whereas the Maxine's Mop brushes are nice for powders. However-- the flat brushes in this brown set are good for packing on and controlling loose shadows.

The brushes below are the ones I've gotten the most use out of. I've often used the one on the left (the #6) either to apply a cream shadow base, or to apply a loose shadow wet with a mixing medium. These nice flat brushes can really control the color and pack it on. The more squared-off brush (the #8) can once again be good for packing on a loose shadow, or creating a more angular effect with the shadow. I'm not saying the Maxine's Mop brushes can't handle loose shadows, but these very flat brushes used with a "patting" technique can place the shadow on the eye with more control, minimizing fallout that can be created with a rapid back & forth motion.


Pricing Note: These may sell for slightly different prices depending on where you pick them up. I found the Maxine's Mop brushes at Hobby Lobby for 2 or 3 bucks for the smaller brushes, and 6 bucks for the biggest brush... however they often have half off sales- and I got them all for half price. I found the 10 brush set at Wal-Mart for just a few dollars! SWEET!

Question of the Week: Pink & Purple Wins!

Hey guys! OMG I don't know if you're having bad weather where you are- but southern Illinois is supposed to get POUNDED with snow/sleet/ice tonight and tomorrow... eek! I just hope I'm able to get to work safely. During times like this, the weather person always says- "I'd just recommend staying indoors, don't get on the road." But of course because the news is what I do- I HAVE to go to work... oh well. I have four wheel drive. LOL.



Anyway... This past week's Question of the Week asked you guys what colorful eye tutorial you'd like to see me do. The pink/purple look won... followed by green, gold/orange, and blue. There were a total of 369 votes! Holy cow! I'm not posting an all out FOTD of the look on here, because I showed all the products I used in my video... that and my camera battery is charging and I sort of need to get this posted now.

Hey everyone! How's it goin? Well today is Tyler's birthday and last night we went out to celebrate... my eye look was kind of dramatic, so instead of a Face of the Day, I thought it would be more appropriate to call it a "Face of the Night" haha :)

Also I'm pretty much just outlining my eye and lip look for this post... I was testing out some different face products and honestly don't remember exactly what all I put on :)

-First I put my Mary Kay Eye Primer on both eyes...

-Then I used a shimmery pink shade in my Revlon Creme Shadow palette in Va Va Va Bloom...

-Next- all over my lid- I layered a shimmery pink shade and a shimmery fuschia color from my Coastal Scents 88 Shimmer palette.

-Then I used a shimmery charcoal shade in my crease and on the outer half of my lid.

-I deepened my outer V using my Makeup For Ever Diamond Shadow- It's a sparkly black

-I used a light shimmery pink from the 88 shimmer palette as a highlight just under my brow

-For liner I used Revlon Colorstay liquid in black on the top lashline, extending out past the natrual lashline... followed by Revlon Colorstay pencil in black on the bottom. I set the bottom liner with the MUFE Diamond Shadow.

-I also topped off this eye look with some falsies: Ardell Invisiband in "Demi Pixies"

-On my lips, I used my Rimmel Lasting Finish lipstick in Metallic Seduction, with NYX Goddess of the Night lip gloss on top in French Kiss.

I've Found My Favorite Pink Lipstick!

FAVORITE PINK LIPSTICK?! I know, it's a bold claim! You'd be as excited as I am if I posted a pic of all my non-sucessful pink lipstick purchases. Recently I was in Walgreens (buying Rimmel makeup on a BOGO deal), and I knew I already liked the Lasting Finish lipstick... I had it in a different color that's sort of a deep red shade that I sometimes use for work. So I thought, what the heck, I like the creamy smooth texture, moisturizing feel on my lips, and the fact that it has pretty decent staying power. I had a hunch- like a really positive feeling- when I picked up the shade in Vintage. It just looked so wearable- light pink, but not bright. Nice nude undertones that keep it subtle and natural.

After putting in on as soon as I got in my car (cause I'm like that, I'll open makeup that I'm really excited about IMMEDIATELY to test it)... I was right! This is a kick ass lipstick! I find a lot of nude lipsticks I like, and quite a few red/berry shades, but hardly any pinks! This, however, is the best for me. And I felt the need to blog about it, because I thought it'd be the best for a lot of other people too.

A few important details:

NAME: Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in #26, Vintage

PRICE: Around $5... prices vary by store

AVAILABILITY: You can find Rimmel cosmetics at most drugstores/discount stores

PACKAGING: Smooth dark maroon tube with a the little Rimmel crown logo on top. classy.

SCENT: Light slightly sweet scent. Pleasant and not strong.

AMOUNT OF SHADES: 30 shades total, so you have options if you don't like #26 Vintage

PRODUCT CLAIMS: (according to Rimmel website)

"Locks colour to lips for up to 8 hours wear. 50% more colour. Soft, smooth, comfortable formula."

HOW WELL IT MEETS CLAIMS: I must admit, I don't think this lasts for 8 hours. Fortunately I love the shade and texture so much, it doesn't bother me to reapply. It's not like it slides right off your lips, but it's not an 8 hour lipstick. If you're not eating or drinking, it will stay on rather well for several hours. Absolutely comfortable on your lips and nicely pigmented.

Bumpits Review!

Hey! What's up guys? Perhaps you've stumbled across my Bumpits headband tutorial on YouTube. Basically Bumpits are hair volumizing inserts... whether you refer to it as a pouf, bump, or height in your hair- you can get it with this set of five inserts you can use a number of different ways. They're made by a company called Big Happie Hair. I'm still learning about bumpits, but I will be posting tutorials on different looks once I feel I've "mastered" them. This may not be a tool I use in my hair everyday, becuase I don't necessarily want the look that bumpits give you on a daily basis. But that's the beauty of this set- it's temporary! You can take them out and put them in whenever you want!

As you can see- the set comes with 5 pieces- The largest bumpit is called the Super Volume Rockstar Bumpit. This one gives you a LOT of height, and probably isn't one I'd use often. Then you get two Classic volume bumpits. As you'll see in future tutorials, these can be used together for a great look. Finally, you get two Princess Bumpits for a small bump in your bangs. You also get a helpful instruction page showing you how to achieve different looks.

-A variety of shades from Blonde to Black so they'll blend with your hair

-You can produce SO many styles- just use your imagination!

-The style is really in right now- so you're able to be trendy but not breaking the bank
-A good thing for people who don't like teasing their hair
-Overall, easy to use

CONS:

-Different hair types will handle these differently- so it may take some practice... for example a bit more teasing on fine hair

-Long hair worn down without any headbands or accessories may require two classic bumpits instead of one- so you don't get a "drop-off" appearance in the back. It needs to stay rounded with a nice shape.

Shown here is a headband look using one classic Bumpit. I've found it's one of the easiest styles to do!

UPCOMING TUTORIALS: I've done a basic headband look, but I plan to do other styles, like just natural hair down, half up, ponytails, side ponytails, front bump, updo's, etc. Keep checking back with my YT channel: http://youtube.com/emilynoel83 ... as you'll notice, bumpits may require a bit of teasing and hairspray- but they WILL stay in! Coastal Scents 88 Shimmer Palette!

Look what I have! OMG I'm so excited about this! I got this in the mail yesterday, and I'm so eager to post some review/tutorials on to array of different shades in this palette. This is the 88 Shimmer palette available on the Coastal Scents website for $24.95...

I also have the 78 color palette which includes a number of bright matte shadows, along with some shimmery shades and some blushes. I have the neutral palette as well. I was excited to get this shimmer palette because I often find shimmery shades easier to blend, and I've heard so many great reviews on it. After swatching a few different shades, I can see that the colors are just as vivid and beautiful as they've been descsribed. I can't wait to try out some looks!

Caring for Your False Eyelashes

Hey guys! Hope all is well. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! After anchoring the morning news, I had the opportunity to report on an MLK memorial breakfast here in southern Illinois. There was so much excitement for this year's event with Barack Obama's inauguration right around the corner. It turned out to be a beautiful story about the hope MLK has created for this country.

In other news, which seems pretty trivial considering the paragraph above... I'm addressing some questions I received after posting my False Eyelash tutorial. How do you take the lashes off? How do you clean them? How long can you use them before throwing them out? I plan to answer those questions in this blog. Enjoy!

REMOVING LASHES FROM YOUR EYE:

Once you're ready to take the lashes off, just get a light grip on the outer corner of the lash strip, and slowly and gently pull them off. The glue does not dry hard as a rock- it remains flexible so it will not pull or be painful. Keep in mind, when applying the lashes you want to get them as close to the lashline as possible without being ON the lashes themselves. This way when you remove the strip of lashes- you won't pull out any of your own. However If you do get some glue on your natural lashes- don't freak out. If you're gentle, you can still get them off without losing your own lashes.

CLEANING THE LASHES: WHAT YOU NEED

To clean your false lashes, I recommend using the following items pictured above... Eye makeup remover (I use Rimmel), the container your lashes came in, some Q-tips, a tissue, and of course- the lashes you want to clean. I recommend cleaning them soon after your wear them. If you let them sit too long, the mascara on them can affect the shape and leave them brittle and mishapen. If you watch my falsies tutorial, you'll notice I recommend using mascara to blend the fakes with your own. Perhaps that's not your style... well I would still recommend cleaning them off with some eye makeup remover just for sanitation purposes.

STEP #1: REMOVE THE ADHESIVE

As you can see in this extreme closeup, I use dark-toned glue on my lashes... it appears grey when it's wet, but it dries black. Before I start cleaning the lashes, I simply pull the glue from the lash strip. It remains flexible and somewhat stretchy- so just peel it right off. Once again, the key word is "gentle"... pull to hard and you could actually pull some of the lashes off the strip too. It's not rocket science, just don't get rough with it! :D

STEP #2: REMOVE MASCARA FROM LASHES

Now that your lash band looks like it did when you bought them, it's time to get that gunky mascara off the lashes. Here's how I do it- I dunk my Q-tip into my eye makeup remover, and then (on top of a tissue), I gently rub the q-tip over the lashes (moving in outward strokes from the band). You'll notice a lot of mascara residue collecting on the tissue. Once the lashes look and feel smooth, you're done cleaning them off! If the mascara seems to be particularly resistant, I'd suggest putting some remover on a cotton ball and then holding it for a few seconds on the lashes so it begins to break down the mascara... the lightly rub and it *should* come off.

STEP #3: STORAGE

It's a good idea to hold onto that case that the lashes came in. Otherwise I'm really not sure how in the world you'd keep them nice and neat. After a few uses they may not bond to that plastic like they originally did, but that's ok. They're safe in there! Plus it helps you remember what kind to go buy next time! (or what not to buy)

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO THROW OUT THE LASHES?

There's really no hard and fast rule that I can give you as far as a specific time frame that the lashes will be good for... There have been some sets that I've gotten 6 or 7 uses out of... that's becuase I cleaned them promptly after wearing, I was gentle when I cleaned them, I NEVER slept in them (this can cause them to get very mishapen), and I stored them in their container.

Some signs that it's time to toss them out? If they don't seem to have the same shape they did when you bought them. Note: sometimes as you wear lashes, the shape of the band slightly changes, becoming easier to place on your own lashes- this is a GOOD thing! Toss them out if: the lashes start falling off them you clean them, the outer lashes start pointing in a different direction, straying from the pack, if the lashes feel brittle and aren't straight & smooth, or if they look downright nasty and you don't want to wear them anymore!

Whew! this was a long blog, but I hope it was helpful. It's definitely some much needed info- and it's just as vital to know how to care for the lashes as it is to know how to apply them. Please don't hesitiate to let me know if you think I left something out!

Tutorial: False Eyelashes! (bonus Smokey Eye)

Hi!

Last night I used my Coastal Scents 78-color eyeshadow/blush palette to create a smokey eye and then I thought, why not throw on some false eyelashes? It was the perfect opportunity to do a tutorial, which I've been asked about for quite awhile now. As I said in the video, what works for me in terms of applying false lashes may not work for you, but perhaps this video will give you a few tips. I used Andrea Modlash #53 lashes, along with Duo dark tone waterproof lash adhesive (it looks grey but dries black)... I find both of those items at Walgreens :D

As for the eye look I'm sporting in this tutorial- It's a six-step smokey eye- using the Coastal Scents 78-color eyeshadow/blush palette. I love how pigmented the colors in this palette are! Amazing color payoff. I'm so excited- I've ordered the 88-color shimmer palette... should be arriving soon! :D

(prep work: prime lids- I use Mary Kay eye primer. For added intensity, use a cream color base, I like NYX Jumbo pencil in Pots & Pans, a metallic silver shade)

1. With eyeshadow brush, apply metallic silver shade on inner half of the lid

2. Apply matte taupe/grey shade on outer half of the lid, overlapping and blending with the silver

3. With crease brush, apply charcoal grey shade all over crease

4. With a fine crease brush, lightly and carefully blend matte black shade in the outer portion of the crease to add intensity. (this shade can be difficult to blend, so only get a small amoung on your brush)

5. With a regular crease brush- get a small amount of the matte burgundy shade on the brush and lightly create a halo of color on the border of the charcoal grey you already applied to the crease. This adds warmth to the look and blends easily with step #6...

6. Use the shimmery pink highlight shade under the arch of brow. lighly overlap with burgundy shade for a seamless blend of the colors.

*Additional steps: I used Revlon colorstay liquid liner in black on my top lashline, widening toward the outer portion of the eye, and extending slightly past the natural lashline. Then use Revlon Colorstay Pencil liner in black- blend outer corner with the liquid, and line all the way across. Use liner brush to top lower liner with charcoal grey shadow. Curl lashes and apply one coat of mascara prior to applying false eyelashes- this helps everything blend seamlessly.

Hey everyone!

Hope you're having a great weekend. Mine has been super fun so far. Yesterday some members of the morning show crew went bowling and that was a lot of fun, even though I'm a terrible bowler. Oddly enough, a couple of beers later I did much better in the second game! :D

*Applied yellow shade in CoverGirl Tropical Fusion palette on inner half of lid w/ sponge tip applicator
*Applied green shade all over lid and up into crease- also w/ sponge tip applicator for more dense coverage
*Used the charcoal (darkest grey shade) in NYX white, silver, charcoal palette to darken outer half of crease
*Used Cover Girl single in Golden Sunrise as a highlight (it's lighter & more sheer than it appears in packaging)


LINER, LASHES, & LIPS...














*Lined upper lashline with Relvon Colorstay liquid liner in Black Shimmer
*Lined lower lashline using Maybelline Define-a-line in Ebony Black, then used smudge tip to smudge out the liner a little
*With a liner brush- went over lower liner with the green shade in the Cover Girl Tropical Fusion palette
*Curled lashes with ELF eyelash curler and applied Almay One Coat Nourishing Mascara Triple Effect in Blackest Black
*On lips- Revlon Colorstay Mineral Lipglaze in Lasting Shimmer

Free Makeup This Tuesday!

So for my job- aside from anchoring- I tend to report on consumer-related issues... things like recalls, special deals, finances, etc... of course if I could report on purely makeup/hair related topics I'd be in heaven, but I can't. However, I always get really excited when something makeup-related is also a news headline. Today was one of those days!

On Tuesday, January 20th, several major retailers will be giving away $175 million worth of free high-end cosmetics as part of a class action settlement. It alleges stores planned to fix prices, therefore department stores such as Macy's and Dillard's will distribute free cosmetics next Tuesday on a first come, first serve basis.

The deal allows for ONE free product from one of the manufacturer defendants involved. A few of those include Estee Lauder, Lancome, and Clinique. The offer is available to shoppers who bought certain cosmetics between Spring of '94 and the summer of 2003. You don't have to show a receipt, but you will have to sign a form showing you've received only one free product.

That was the news version up there... An additional detail that you'll find when you visit that link- the different brands have selected products that will be offered. So It's not like you can walk up to the Lancome counter and take anything you want for free... they have selected items you can choose from (I think they're valued at around 20-25 bucks.) Also, I believe you can only get one free item from ONE of the brands involved. So even though brands like Estee Lauder and Clinique are mentioned in the lawsuit- you can't get products from all the brands. So all in all, it's kind of a small thing, but hey, if you're watching your budget- one free item from the department store is a big deal!

Too Faced World Domination Beauty Box

Hello!

How are my wonderful readers? Is it cold where you live? It's not too bad today in southern Illinois- but tomorrow and Friday it's supposed to get SUPER cold. eeek! I feel so informed about the weather since our morning show is an hour and a half long so I hear about a zillion weather forecasts during that time haha.

Anyway... in a recent YT video, I did a tutorial/review on the Too Faced World Domination Backstage Beauty makeup kit. The only things I focused on were they eyeshadows (since it was an eyeshadow tutorial). Overall- I thought they appeared so pretty in the box- but they weren't nearly that colorful on my eye.... don't worry though- all is not lost! The beauty box is full of other things that I've tried since that review-- blush, bronzer, highlighter, and lip color! And those things are all AWESOME!

This is what the box looks like all opened up. There's actually a little mirror in the lid and that little Marilyn Monroe looking figure spins around- it plays music like a music box! Plus all of the palettes lift out so you could actually use this as a jewelry box when the MU is all gone. I think the overall packaging is absolutely adorable- and the box looks so cute in my makeup area! Definitely an extravagant looking kit!

*EYESHADOW...
First off- for the most complete info on the eyeshadows, check out my youtube channel and look for the Too Faced eye tutorial. It's like a review and tutorial in one! See the vibrant purple & teal shades in that palette? If only they looked close to that good on my eye! They really just look sort of bland. I mean it's not like you're going to look bad if you wear those shadows- it's still a decent look! Just not nearly that bold. The lighter colors in that palette are better in terms of color payoff.

*BLUSH...

The blush is gorgeous! OMG- I was sort of wondering after trying the shadows what the rest of this palette would be like- but WOW- this is the Too Faced I know and love! It's a peachy pink shade that I don't think any skin tone can go wrong with. Two thumbs up! very very pretty blush :D

*HIGHLIGHT & BRONZER...

On the left in this pic is the highlight shade. It's a light golden peach. A little goes a long way, so don't feel like you need to load up your brush by any means! It's nice to use on the top of your cheekbones, under the brow as a brow-bone highlight, or just an overall nice contrast to any contouring you do. As for the bronzer- it's two tones- and the darker one is still quite light- but it will work perfect for fair skin and brings a nice warmth to medium skin like mine too. Reminds me of the bronzer in one of my Too Faced Quickie Chronicles palettes- like it a lot! :D

*LIP GLOSS...

These just may be the star of this whole beauty box. I really like Too Faced lip glosses and these are no exception. There are a couple of pink shades in there that are absolutely OUTSTANDING! I don't think I've ever liked light pink on my lips as much as I did when I tried these. The texture is perfect- creamy and only slightly sticky- just enough to stay on your lips and not run outside the lip line. WOO HOO for this part of the box! love it! :D :D

This beauty box was a birthday gift from my sister. She is so thoughtful and one of my favorite people in the entire world. Not just for getting me awesome gifts- she's just a wonderful friend and has supported me throughout everything in my life. I love you! :)
