QOTW: Weathering the Heat!

(answer next week's question in the right sidebar!)

Hola! 2 blogs in one day?! Oh yeah! Gotta recap the Question of the Week! Last week I asked: What part of your makeup can't withstand the heat? Here's what you had to say!

  • Foundation/cream based face products: 239 (57%)
  • Eyeliner/Mascara: 68 (16%)
  • Eyeshadow: 39 (9%)
  • Powders (blush/bronzers): 38 (9%)
  • Lipcolor: 32 (7%)

More than half of those who responded said foundation or cream based products can't withstand the heat. The other answers were far behind, but the next was eyeliner/mascara, then shadow, powders, and lipcolor. For me, I feel like powders don't last as long on me, especially if powder was the only thing i had on. That's just me though! Either way, I thought I'd give some tips for making each part of your makeup last longer...

♥♥♥♥♥

When I know it's going to be warm but want my makeup to last- I'll use a thin layer of long-wearing liquid foundation like Rimmel Lasting Finish or Revlon Colorstay. Laying it on thick will almost create more of a problem when you sweat, so a thin layer will give you good coverage without caking it on. Set it with a dusting of loose powder, and then your blush and bronzer. The key continues to be THIN layers. The thicker you put it on, the more obvious will be when it comes off... but liquid and powders really go hand in hand for staying power, so use sparingly, but use them both.

Eyeshadow is another tough issue- the fold in your crease is a natural spot for sweat, so I'd advise using a primer. I love Too Faced Shadow Insurance... but check out my video on shadow primers on my youtube channel for a full review! Often times- they really make a difference. If you're still worried about your shadow staying, go with sheer washes of color- this will also be easier to touch up later. Eyeliners can also benefit from the primer you apply, and liquid or waterproof formulas are your best bet. Wet & Wild has H2O proof liquid liner that is super long lasting, and if you prefer pencils, I love Revlon Colorstay and Almay liner pencils. If you struggle with mascara, go with a waterproof formula and consider skipping the lower lashes to prevent smudging under the eye. Also remember my liner trick for ANY weather- with a concealer brush, dab powder right under your lower liner. This will help the liner stay put by absorbing any oils. Lip color- as indicated by your answers- isn't a huge concern. It's not a big deal in terms of reapplying, and there are lots of lip stains or long wearing formulas on the market. Minty lip balms like Burt's Bees are refreshing in warm weather! :)

Thanks for stopping by the blog everyone!

Tyler & Emily Take St. Louis!

Hey everyone!! How are you? Back in the saddle again for Monday! I had such a great weekend I thought I'd just do a whole "Emily's Journal" post. It's been so long since I'd had a 4 day weekend so I really enjoyed myself. Tyler and I spent part of the time in St. Louis where we enjoyed some fun in an area called "Laclede's Landing"- there are lots of fun restaurants & bars. We also headed to a great mall where I was able to do some makeup shopping! (Check out the haul video below to see what Tyler and I got!) My haul included items from Smashbox, Benefit, and MAC! :D I just regret not taking more pictures- I almost forget about my Blackberry being able to post pictures on twitter and that kind of thing so it's not quite natural for me to whip out the phone for every photo op. I'll get better, I promise!

What else is new... Tyler is on a job interview as we speak! For those who asked- it will be about another month or so before he gets his results from the bar exam! We wish they would come faster because it would definitely make the job search easier... but he doesn't want to waste any time so he's been applying in hopes that he'll pass. I think he will- he's a smartie! On my youtube channel on the sidebar, I posted a link to Tyler's twitter since he appeared in the video, and all night he was like, someone new is following me on twitter! LOL :D I told him now he's going to need to update more. If you want to follow Tyler: http://twitter.com/tdihle . Have a great week everyone!! :D

QOTW: Touching Up Makeup

Hey Everyone! In this week's Question of the Week, I asked how many times a day do you touch-up your makeup? Here's what you had to say...

  • Never touch-up: 172 (39%)
  • 1 or 2 times: 246 (55%)
  • 3 to 5 times: 20 (4%)
  • More than 5 times: 2 (0%)
    Votes so far: 440

I predicted this one correctly! I figured it would be one or two times for most people. That was my answer- except on certain days I might re-apply lipstick a little more and that results in more touch-ups. But on the average day it's 1 or 2 times for me. What really surprised me was what came in second place... I figured 3 to 5 times would beat out never touching up, but that was not the case! Whatever the situation is for you- you might get some tips from my Makeup Touch-up tips video! I first put this out about a month or so ago, but thought it definitely fit with the topic of this blog :) Don't forget to answer next week's Question!

♥ Emily's Journal ♥

Hey friends! Hope you all had a great day today! My day went pretty well. Except things got off to a bit of a rough start this morning- I started to fall behind because I just couldn't decide on what outfit to wear for the news this morning! (I realize this is not a major crisis, but I thought you stylish people would have some advice). I'll almost always pick out what I want to wear the night before since I get up so early, but I guess I didn't have any good ideas so I just hoped it would "come to me" in the morning. Not the case! Even though I have a LOT of clothes- sometimes I just cannot decide what to wear! And too much repitition is not good when you're on TV everyday! Do you guys ever have this problem? A closet full of clothes and you just find yourself staring at it, wondering why you can't just come up with something? I've heard of people going "shopping in their closet" by trying to rediscover some older stuff you haven't worn in awhile, and I think that's something I need to do. But overall, I'm ready for fall. When I can wear sweaters and layer more since it's not so hot out, I feel like I have many more options. Enough of that little complaining session! haha... tomorrow is my last day of work for the week! Then some time for rest and relaxation! woohoo! :D hope you all have a great day!

MASSIVE Shadow Primer Review!

Hey everyone! It's been a long time coming! But I'm finally reviewing not one-- but 5 different eyeshadow primers! This was a tough review to do. I considered factors like staying power and the vibrancy that it added to my eyeshadow. In this online synopsis of my video review, I'm trying to keep it brief and easy to understand (sometimes it's just easier to read something than listen to it) but I'm also including information on pricing and packaging. Please be aware- I do not have oily lids. My eyelids stay relatively dry. My comments in this review pertain to how well these primers worked for me. I hope you'll find something you're interested in trying!

(left to right: L'oreal De-Crease, Bee Luscious Shadow Magnet, ELF Mineral Eyeshadow Primer, Mary Kay Signature Eye Primer, Too Faced Shadow Insurance)
(same sequence applies to these swatches of Cover Girl's Forever Fig eyeshdaow)
(RANKINGS BELOW ARE LISTED FROM WORST TO BEST)
#5 L'oreal De-Crease
  • COST: $7 (approx)
  • WHERE TO BUY: drugstore
  • PACKAGING: short-handled wand applicator
  • CONSISTENCY: creamy, turns dry
  • STAYING POWER: overall good, but occasional creasing
  • SHADOW INTENSITY: does not effortlessly make shadows appear more intense
#4 Bee Luscious Shadow Magnet in Light
  • COST: $17
  • PACKAGING: shallow tub
  • CONSISTENCY: very tacky
  • STAYING POWER: for best results, must use extremely thin layer. Creasing still possible
  • SHADOW INTENSITY: grabs the shadow, excellent intensity

#3 ELF Mineral Eyeshadow Primer

  • COST: $3
  • PACKAGING: long-handled wand applicator
  • CONSISTENCY: feels silky, leaves behind the slightest bit of tacky feel
  • STAYING POWER: has proven staying power even in sweat-enducing conditions
  • SHADOW INTENSITY: average, must build up the shadow somewhat

#2 Mary Kay Signature Eye Primer

  • COST: $12
  • WHERE TO BUY: http://www.marykay.com/ (to shop with a consultant)
  • PACKAGING: squeeze tube
  • CONSISTENCY: smooth, moderate tacky feel left behind on lid
  • STAYING POWER: good staying power, creasing is very rare
  • SHADOW INTENSITY: provides excellent shadow intensity

#1 Too Faced Shadow Insurance

  • COST: $17
  • PACKAGING: squeeze tube
  • CONSISTENCY: creamy & leaves behind a silky yet slightly moisturizing feel on lids
  • STAYING POWER: hands down- the best. Can withstand challenging conditions. (this swatch was the most difficult to wash off)
  • SHADOW INTENSITY: without being extremely tacky, makes shadows appear true to their appearance in packaging. Provides impressive finish to even the cheapest shadow.

♥ Emily's Journal ♥
It's been awhile since my last journal entry! The last time I blogged I just didn't have the time :( Just so you know, I didn't forget about Question of the Week- I just wanted to coordinate this blog post with my youtube video, so I'll do QOTW tomorrow :) I am super pumped about this week. Why, you ask? Because I only work 3 days! Don't get me wrong, I love my job. I enjoy the people I work with, and I love anchoring. But when you have to get up at 1:30 a.m. to start your work day, you savor a day off. This week I have Thursday & Friday off and Tyler and I are going to fit in some fun stuff during those days and into the weekend. I really don't remember the last time I had 4 days off in a row. You can bet I"ll be getting lots of super awesome tutorials done during that time! :D :D In other news... I did a story at a winery/vineyard today. They were doing their first grape crushing of the season so that was exciting! Southern Illinois has many different vineyards and I haven't been disappointed by a single one that I've visited- either for recreation or for news stories. I'm sort of jumping all over the place, but this past weekend I got some glasses! They're cute! I posted a pic on one of my recent twitter updates so feel free to check that out- http://twitter.com/emilynoel83 . I'm thinking about wearing them for the news tomorrow... but I'm a little scared. Never worn glasses on the news before! BLACKBERRY TOUR UPDATE: still LOVING IT!!! Will post a video with me & Tyler comparing our different Blackberries once I learn a little more. there's a lot to know, you know! :D Have a great day everyone!

Back to School Makeup!

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of uploading a back-to-school makeup tutorial as I write this. It made me think back to the way I did my makeup in school, and I revisited some pictures to remind myself. In many cases, it's not too different from the way I do makeup today! I remember being a big fan of mascara, lip gloss, and bronzer- even if I had nothing else on my face. I'd love to find some high school pics, but I pretty much only have college ones on this computer so I thought I'd post a few! I was a huge makeup fan in my college years, but since then, I've learned more and have become more comfortable experimenting with color- especially if I'm not at work. :)

What do you remember about your school makeup? Or if you're currently in school, what are your basic products you can't do without on a school day? How have things changed for you over the years? Did you have any major "makeup don'ts" back in your early makeup days? Do tell!
Thanks for stopping by the blog!

QOTW: Makeup Teachers

Hey everyone! This week's Question of the Week asked: Who FIRST taught you how to do makeup? This wasn't asking how you pick up new techniques or where you like to find makeup advice... but rather what was the first way you learned to apply it? Here are the results...
  • Family member- 111 (28%)
  • Friend- 23 (5%)
  • Makeup Class/expert- 10 (2%)
  • Instructional videos/websites- 71 (17%)
  • Magazines/books- 49 (12%)
  • No Teacher- 131 (33%)

I must admit, I'm a little surprised by these results. It appears many people picked up their first piece of makeup and started applying it with no indication from anyone/anything of how to use it at all. I know many people refer to themselves as "self-taught"... simply meaning they have no formal training but may still used other makeup resources to learn. But if these are the results, these are the results I suppose! An extremely small percentage answered makeup class/expert, and I didn't really think that category would get a lot of votes. I would imagine many people do at least a little experimentation before getting professional instruction.

As for my answer- I fall into the Family Member category. Before I was even of the age to wear makeup, I recall my mom putting it on and watching her, looking through her stash, and being there when she was placing an order from Avon. When I first applied makeup, she had a hand in it, telling me what type of blush to use or a certain kind of lipstick. Soon after that, I sought out magazines in my quest for makeup knowledge. I think it's where I first developed my obsession for testing out different types of products because mags like Seventeen, Teen, or YM (is that even around anymore?) would recommend stuff. If you enjoy my reviews & recommendations- thank my mom... she was the one who allowed the drugstore product experimentation to begin back in high school. Every now and then I'd pick something up, go home and play with it, read a magazine, get something else, play with it.... and the cycle just went on and on. It continued into college... around that time I started reviewing products on a website called makeuptalk.com. A great place for reviews & message boards. It wasn't until just a few years ago (when I started my job in news) that I discovered the makeup world on YouTube. So then those videos became another way to learn about products and techniques. I think I learned the most about makeup techniques on YouTube. After learning about different makeup artists, I've also learned through their books... Kevin Aucoin, Bobbi Brown, and Carmindy all have great books- I'll probably do a massive review on those at some point. So basically- I've covered the whole spectrum of makeup teachers, and now I'm fortunate enough to have an outlet to teach others. It's an amazing thing! I hope everyone takes advantage of the many resources and inspirations that are available to them!

♥ Emily's Journal ♥

I'm sorry I've gone so long without a blog everyone! I must admit that a certain handheld device has been occupying a lot of my time... AKA my Blackberry Tour! It's awesome!

There it is with Beauty Broadcast on it! I got it Saturday and have pretty much been working to understand everything it is capable of. But once I do, I think it will allow me to keep in touch with Beauty Broadcast viewers/readers much more easily! Tyler already has a Blackberry Curve, so he's now envious of my latest & greatest Blackberry version. This is my first "smart phone" and I'm really enjoying it so far! The screen is amazing and I love how most websites appear just like they would on your computer! Plus there's a great camera on it, and I can do little video updates on the go! How cool is that?! I believe I've used like 99% exclamation points in this section LOL! Thanks for stopping by and have a great day everyone!

3 Year Wedding Anniversary!

When I woke up this morning, this was what I found on the kitchen counter next to the coffee maker- the first place I go at 1:30 a.m. when I get up & get ready for the morning newscast. On a day that I found it especially tough to get myself up out of bed, this really set the tone for an awesome day. Sorry guys, no beauty blogging here, and no YouTube videos today. It's Tyler's & my 3 year anniversary!

Nothing beats truffles & a dozen gorgeous pink tipped roses to start the day, but August of 2009 marks a lot of milestones for Tyler and myself that we can be plenty grateful for... even without flowers & chocolate. We've been together since 2001 (junior year of high school), and now we've gotten through three years of marriage- during what was probably one of the most stressful times of our lives. Within weeks of our wedding, we were both just getting started in the real world. We moved nearly 6 hours from home, Tyler was beginning the scary endeavor of law school, and I began the search for a job at a TV news station (forunately I found it fairly soon). After taking on a handful of positions, I've now moved on to become a full time anchor- and after hours upon hours of studying- Tyler has graduated law school and taken (and hopefully passed) the bar exam. During much of that time- I was making YouTube videos... a great way for me to exercise my creative bone and relieve the stress of story deadlines and live reports.
While the past 3 years have been a time of progress, they haven't been without tough moments. In case you don't know much about the relationship between me & Tyler, he's the calm, cool, & collected one and I'm the emotional one that's always sharing feelings and not really holding much back. So whenever I was missing family or stressing about my job, Tyler was my shoulder to lean on. He's always been that way. He doesn't judge me, doesn't try to change the way I feel... but he's always been there for me, and willing to do anything for me. I like to think I've been sort of a "cheerleader" for him as he embarked on one of his most difficult journeys in his life.
No matter how rough the road is in your journey- no day should go unappreciated. A new day is a new chance to start fresh. Try your best, treat people with love, and do what you know is right. Even on a down day, let your light shine. It will in turn lift you up, and take others with you.
I'm grateful for all of you who have kept up with my online makeup endeavors. You continually brighten my day, and I hope I'm able to return the favor.
On that note, I'll have a truffle :)
Have a great day everyone!

QOTW: What Makeup Do You Buy Cheap?

This week's question was: What makeup item are you most likely to spend less on? Better late than never- but I'm writing my results blog post! I try to get this done on Monday, but I just ran out of time in the day! Anyway- Here's what you had to say...

  • Foundation/Powder 36 (7%)
  • Blush/Bronzer 63 (12%)
  • Eyeshadow 42 (8%)
  • Eyeliner 80 (15%)
  • Mascara 94 (18%)
  • Lipstick/Lipgloss 190 (37%)

Votes so far: 505 Poll closed

Like the majorityof you, my answer to this question was lipstick/lipgloss. If I'm in a drugstore, it seems like it's the thing I'm most likely to stock up on. However- as you've probably noticed through my videos- I tend to seek out the less expensive but surprisingly good items in ANY category of makeup. Therefore, I wanted to compile a list of some of my

CURRENT FAVORITE CHEAP MAKEUP BUYS...

These are items that I've been using a lot just recently and really loving- and they're all cheap! I also find them all to be great summer beauty products. (one in each category of the QOTW).

  • Wet & Wild Bronzzer in Bali Bronze... a light dusting of this deeper shade of bronzer looks great on medium skin tones and can really enhance a tan.
  • Revlon Colorstay Makeup for Combo/Oily Skin in True Beige... Yes I still love my Rimmel Lasting Finish, but I've been using this a bit more lately since my skin is a bit darker (thru self tanning) and this shade is a great match. Just wore it in major heat on a news story today at a salvage yard (glamorous, I know), but it really didn't budge. I also made a conscious effort not to touch my face- and that helps the makeup stay as well.
  • Maybelline the Colossal Volum' Express Mascara in Glam Black... lately I've been experimenting with different kinds of false lashes... whether I'm going to work, going out, or whatever- I've just been playing around with them a lot. This mascara does a great job of blending the real & fake. Or if you just wear it alone, it does a decent job of adding volume. It's grown on me, because I wasn't a huge fan when I first tried it.
  • Almay Eyeliner in Black... I believe this product claims to last 16 hours- that's also the claim of Revlon Colorstay products so I got this awhile back to see if it could even compare to Colorstay. I must say- it goes on more smoothly, and the staying power is practically the same as far as I can tell! I need to try it sometime without topping it with a shadow- so I can see how this truly holds up on it's own.
  • Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Champagne... I will warn you now this does NOT have much color in it at all. It gives a sheer hint of shimmer to the lips and not much more... but I still love it! Used alone, it makes my lips more alive and pretty looking, and it's also great under a lipstick because you get that nice cooling, minty sensation that Burt's Bees glosses have.
  • Cover Girl Eye Enhancers Trio in Shimmering Sands... it's one of the first shadow kits I ever owned, and i've repurchased multiple times. The shadows have improved in texture over the years, and if you want a little contouring but still want to look AWAKE- I've found this is a great pick. It helps me when I'm getting ready early in the morning because I'm tired- and these shadows don't make me look like it. They're not too dark & heavy.

♥ Emily's Journal ♥

Hey everyone! It's storming here right now! Lots of thunder, lightning, and wind. I really don't mind storms when I don't have to go outside at all- it's kind of soothing in a way. Tyler noticed I was blogging and wanted to pass along a big thank you for all of the kind messages so many of you left for him through the blog, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter. He survived the bar exam, and while he was studying I was always passing along your good luck wishes. I am so grateful for all of you who regularly check out videos or my blog. I feel like I have a big circle of friends and the online makeup community is just incredible. Thanks for being so great!!!! :D :D

Victoria's Secret Beauty Rush Haul

Hey everyone! Hope you're having a great weekend. I'll elaborate more on mine below, but it did include a trip to the mall today, and when I stopped by Victoria's Secret- I realized that all of their Beauty Rush Cosmetics were 3 for $15 or 6 for $20! Plus there were lots of items that I was eager to try (I hadn't been there in awhile so they were new to me), so I thought, why not do the 6 for $20 deal and see what happens. (If you'd like to take advantage of the deal online, click here.)

(top to bottom: Hot Ginger, Espresso Lane, Plum Crazy)
These Wet/Dry shadows are totally new to me. Their domed shape sort of reminds me of the Physician's Formula Baked Collection... only there was much more color variety and when I swatched some shades in the store, I could tell that these are the real deal. The colors are soft and very pigmented and I'm excited to ge these on my eyes. I decided to go with a couple of neutral shades that could be used together, and then one wild card fun shade to play with as well. Just in terms of swatching them, I really think they are all equally good, but that plum shade is especially dazzling. They all have a pearly gleam to them- I feel a tutorial coming on :)

(left to right: Lip Gloss in Slice of Heaven and Juiced Berry, Soothing Lip Balm in Pretty Buff)
Then I opted to pick out 3 lip products. I have several of these Beauty Rush lip glosses already and I really enjoy them. I think the scents are outstanding and they are just wonderfully glossy. I'm not going to even pretend like I NEED anymore lip gloss, so I won't say that my stash would be suffering if I didn't pick these up... but they just caught my eye so I thought, what the heck, let's do this. I got the Slice of Heaven shade because it had a unique multi-dimensional color quality to it. I can't really describe it. It appears pink in some lights and golden in others- just beautiful! Plus is smells like cake. And the berry shade is a bit more transparent and gel-like than I was hoping for, but it will be a nice way to top off a berry lipstick for sure. Now for the Shoothing lip balm- I already have the regular soothing lip balm but this new Buff shade was intriguing to me... and there wasn't one opened up and available for swatching, so I just went with it. It has a nice minty scent & cool feel on the lips- but it doesn't show up much. It has a very slight nude shimmer- but as you can tell with the swatch on my hand- it's hard to detect.
So overall, I was pleased with what I picked up. I'm most excited about the eyeshadows and can't wait to do a look with them soon. What do you think of the Beauty Rush collection? Any favorites? Do tell! :D

♥ Emily's Journal ♥
Journal time! so this past Thursday a couple of Tyler's sisters (my sisters-in-law, duh) came down to visit us! That's me, Sarah, and Aimee in the pic above. Aimee has a twin sister Rachel, but she was just starting a new job that day and couldn't come down :( But we had an awesome time and it was great to see the girls again. Plus I had Friday off from work, so we partied it up! It was sort of a celebration for Tyler being done with the bar exam, and also for Aimee & Rachel who've been studying abroad in New Zealand. (I looked at their pics- it is gorgeous there and they had a blast). Anyway we had sort of a pizza party at our place, invited Tyler's friend Dan over, and then went out on the town. It was so much fun- I love these girls :D
What else... Friday was pretty low key. The girls had to go back that day, so Tyler and I sort of bummed around for awhile and eventually ran some errands. Then since Wed. August 5th is me & Tyler's 3 year wedding anniversary and I'll have to be in bed by 6 that night for the morning show the following day, we went out and celebrated early. We got sort of dressed up and went to this awesome Thai restaurant in town. Oh it's SO GOOD. I got sweet & sour chicken and their egg rolls are to die for. Then we went to see The Ugly Truth at the movie theater- it has Katherine Heigl in it. I thought it was hilarious! And I could relate to her role working at a TV station haha :D It was a wonderful night and I'm so happy Tyler is in my life. I love him so much and now that the bar exam is over- I'll have to get him doing some more videos!! :D Have a great rest of the weekend everyone!
