Makeup Storage Makeover!

Hey everyone! Many of us use those little stacks of plastic drawers to store our makeup. After seeing mine in the background of my videos time and time again, I thought- maybe there's a way to make these CUTE! My strategy involves a glue gun, and little beads or crystals. I found all of my materials at JoAnn Fabrics, but I'm sure you can find similar items at any craft store, or the Wal-Mart craft section.

Thinking about trying this yourself? Please post a picture on the Beauty Broadcast Facebook page! Thanks!!

Mally *Just Heaven* Brightening Makeup Set

I was wearing this kit in my Full & Fabulous Bun Tutorial- Click here to watch it

Hi everyone! Over the weekend I was so excited to try out the products I received from the Mally Beauty Just Heaven 8-Piece Brightening Collection! I purchased this as Mally's most recent Today's Special Value. The cost was bumped down on that day- but you can still get the kit for around $73 on the QVC website. All you need along with this kit is some foundation or tinted moisturizer, and some concealer- and you're all set! (You could also use a powder to set your foundation for extra long wear). Anyway- I just thought I'd pass along my thoughts on each item in this kit! :)

  • Perfect Prep Poreless Primer in Glow... I believe this is the only travel-sized product in this kit. I love how smoothly it goes on! It feels like a light air-whipped mousse, and you get a super smooth feel... allowing the rest of your makeup to go on very evenly. It looks peachy in the container, and any glow that it provides is super subtle- nothing overly shimmery.
  • Visible Skin Bronzing Powder... The one choice you have to make with this kit is whether you want the "lighter" or "deeper" bronzer. I chose the deeper, because I feel like I have plenty of lighter bronzers, and as I use my sunless tanners and my skin deepens, I thought it'd be nice to have a darker bronzer. I gotta say, this is the darkest bronzer I've ever seen! But it still works for my medium skintone when you use a large brush with it. I could see this being perfect for already very tan skintones who can't ever find a bronzer dark enough. If you also have my skintone and choose deeper- just be careful with your application & keep it light. Since it's matte, it can be a great contour!
  • Effortless Airbrush Blush & Highlight... This product really caught my eye in the QVC presentation, and the photo at the top doesn't do it justice. Both colors in this duo look practically metallic- and you are supposed to use the double ended blush to apply it. Mally advises you to use the lighter end of the brush to apply the highlighter first, then the dark brush to apply the blush. I kind of like that strategy- it keeps the highlight from looking too harsh. This is a very subtle highlight, but I found the blush to be quite pigmented & a beautiful coral-pink shade.
  • Evercolor Endless Eyeshadow in Sunglow... This is one of my favorite parts of this kit! It's a 2-part eyeshadow PLUS applicators for both parts as well! On one end you have your cream shadow- which is a GORGEOUS bronze that goes on super smooth. The other side is basically a loose pigment that really gives the look some shine and this lasted me ALL DAY without creasing. Best of all, you can get by with just these 2 steps because it looks great all over the lid AND into the crease. This is a brand new product from Mally & I'm really impressed!
  • Automatic Starlight Waterproof Eyeliner in Black Navy... I've been nuts about these automatic liners from Mally since I first tried one. They are probably the longest wearing liner for the waterline and they're great on the lashline, too. This Black Navy shade looks surprisingly awesome with the bronze shadow, plus it makes the whites of your eyes pop. So far, I haven't seen these automatic waterproof liners available without getting one in a kit! They are truly phenomenal.
  • Volumizing Mascara... I already had a tube of the Volumizing mascara & knew I loved it!! My mom has some of this mascara as well & she also thinks it's great! I love 2 things about it: the formula isn't too wet, and the brush is super thick with bristles- it allows the brush to grab the individual lashes & plump them up! The color is super rich & black also. I can also apply this to my lower lashes without flaking!
  • High Shine Liquid Lipstick in Just Heaven... This sheer peach color is pretty, but it's not my favorite Mally liquid lipstick. While I enjoy the formula, this particular shade is quite sheer- In my pictures I'm actually wearing a medium pink colored liner underneath to give some more pigmentation.
  • Zippered makeup clutch... Couldn't leave this out! I was impressed with the size of this bag, and the fact that the outer panels have a plastic coating on them, so if it gets dirty, you just wipe it off! There are little pockets inside to hold smaller products.

What I love about this kit from a reviewer's perspective is that what you see on my face is basically what you get! Other than these products- I have on Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, Revlon PhotoReady Concealer, and Ardell Wispies false eyelashes- that's it! Overall, my favorite products in this kit are the primer and the eye products- especially that new Evercolor Eyeshadow and the Waterproof eyeliner. I love the way the bronze and blue tones make my eyes pop. The bronzer + the blush/highlight are a great cocktail for creating cheekbones, too! Hopefully this post gives you an idea of what Mally's Just Heaven kit will do!

Throwback Video of the Week: Holy Grail Lash Glue!

Hello Beauty Broadcast friends! Late last week Blogger was having some problems, so here comes my second update of the day! My Throwback Video of the Week... this is sort of my way of bringing attention to an old video that I've done. With 565 total- it's nice to highlight not-so-new videos that those who're new to Beauty Broadcast might not have seen yet!

This Throwback video isn't super old (it aired on August 30, 2010), but it is very relevant because I've been getting so many questions about false eyelashes lately! Seriously, in the past week I've directed 6 people to this video, and if people that pass me in the grocery store ask about my lashes- I mention this product- Revlon Precision Lash Adhesive!

This stuff is life changing!! Ever since I first tried this lash glue, I haven't used another kind. It really makes the difference in applying lashes, giving you such ease in application. One of the biggest obstacles I used to have was getting just the right amount of glue on the lash strip. If you get too little, your lashes don't stay on. If you get too much, it's a goopy mess on your lashline and the globs of dried glue look really unnatural! No problems with this glue!! In the video I do 2 swipes, but since that time- I've realized I really only need one swipe and my lashes will stay ALL DAY LONG. I also mention some favorite false eyelashes in this video- look for an updated video from me sharing all of my favorite styles! :) And if you need tips on caring for your false eyelashes- CLICK HERE.

Daily Nuggets...
  • 2 blogs AND a video in one day? Woop woop!
  • It was great seeing my parents over the weekend- we had a wonderful time. I miss them now!
  • Heated up half of a BBQ sandwich from yesterday and it was still fantastic.
  • It's been a pretty gloomy day around here! And chilly too. I've been under a blanket & drinking hot chocolate.
  • Cupcake has also been napping under a blanket. No hot chocolate though.
  • I have new Wallflowers to put in around the house! I always get excited about putting new ones in. It's the little things in life, I guess! haha
  • Did boxing on the x-box Kinect with dad over the weekend- I'm so sore now!

My Series for Bridal Guide- Mondays in May!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to fill you in on a special project I've been working on. The beauty editors at Bridal Guide magazine contacted me about doing a 4-part video series for their website during the month of May. They'll each focus on a slightly different aspect of Bridal Beauty- the first is all about getting flawless skin!

Each Monday in May- a bridal video of mine will be posted on the Bridal Guide website! It will be exclusive to their site at first, and later in the week, I'll make it public on my YouTube channel. I was excited to take part in this project, because I know how perfect we want to look on our wedding day, and I believe it really is possible to do it yourself! And just so you know- not ALL of the videos are makeup-related... there's one about hair, too! :) So keep checking back with my channel, and Bridal Guide on Mondays in May for the latest video in the series!

Fresh from the Oven: Milani Baked Shadow!

Hey everyone! Hope your week's going well so far. I just posted a tutorial video using a technique I've been loving lately for eyeshadow! It's nothing terribly new or revolutionary... just something I hadn't done a whole lot of until a particular product came into my life. The Milani Baked Eyeshadows are designed to be worn wet OR dry- and let me tell you... it's pretty eye-opening (no pun intended) when you see how great these look with a little water added! Watch my tutorial & you'll see what I mean!

I've purchased a few of these, and not too long ago, the fine folks at Milani wanted to send me some more. Let's just say- I've had entirely too much fun sitting in my makeup room swatching, creating color combinations, and coming up with ideas for new videos. Of course, these are my honest opinions on the products. Hope you enjoy my swatches & reviews...

A Little Background...

According to Milani, these shadows are baked on Italian terracotta tiles... as soon as I read that, I thought- hmmm... perhaps this is something that will rival the wonderful Baked Eye Rimz from Laura Geller! Milani shadows come in two versions- Metallic and Marbled. Something I noticed across the board with these shades is this... if you use them wet, you'll get more intensity and more staying power. Using them dry will get you a soft look, and color that's not especially bold. All in all- it's like you're getting 2 different colors with each shadow because of how different most of them look going from dry to wet. Almost every shade is buildable when worn wet- meaning you can pile on more color for a look that's even more bold, and you'll still get good staying power. It's important to note that all shades have a shimmery, sparkly, or metallic element. If you're looking for matte, these aren't for you.

I don't like the curved applicator- it can feel kind of awkward when you flip it over & want to apply in a certain direction. Also, the blunt-cut, tiny brush on the other end is not good... it hardly picks up product and doesn't blend. I'd like to see another sponge tip. I know that's a minor detail, but still worth noting, especially if anyone on the Milani team sees this & wants to improve the product.

Metallic Shades
left to right: Pink Twice, I Heart You, Blue My Mind, Purrr-Fect Purple, Teal the Truth, Rich Java

(first swatch in each pair is dry, the second is wet)

The metallic colors look like absolute jewels in the packaging, and while they're pretty & soft when swatched dry, they are much more impressive with a little water added (see my video to check out my wet-shadow strategy). I was very happy with the pink, red, blue, and teal colors. The intensity & staying power when worn wet is nothing short of amazing. For some reason, I couldn't get a major color payoff with the purple, *EDIT* However after trying the purple as an eyeshadow- I was really happy with it- not sure why it didn't swatch so well- maybe I didn't use enough water *END OF EDIT* and while the brown shade was fairly rich, it wasn't really metallic. As always, these are swatched with no primer. I'd imagine the dry colors would look better with a primer... currently they aren't as rich as other metallic shadows I've tried. You know how with some shadows, you put your finger on them to do a swatch, and even though they're powder, they practically feel creamy? Not the case with these. They are as powdery as it gets until you get them wet.

Marbled Shades
left to right: Drench in Gold, Melange, Mix it Up, Intermix, Fusion

(first swatch in each pair is dry, the second is wet)

While the marbled shadows are more neutral, they are no less impressive when worn wet. It's really fun to see what the swirled colors will mix together to give you. If you have no interest wearing eyeshadow wet, I believe these are better in dry form than the metallics. As you look at my arm-load of swatches- don't you think it sort of resembles shades from the Naked palette? You really get 2 shades for every one shadow because of the difference when worn wet. I've noticed a big trend on American Idol is a high concentration of shimmer/sparkle on the lids... these shades will give you that very same look. I think Fusion- the lilac/mauve shade that I used in my tutorial is my favorite... but Mix it Up with the teal sparkle is also pretty breath-taking. Add water & use Mix it Up or Melange as liner shades! LOVE THESE!

Final Thoughts...
Are you willing to wear your eyeshadow wet? If so, you'll be really excited and impressed by what these shadows will do, and how long they'll last. If you don't want to wear them wet, these are more hit and miss... some will still look fairly bold, others won't- you can kind of tell by the swatches. There is nothing for the matte shadow lover in this collection, so while that may be disappointing to some, the sparkle lovers rejoice. I like the fact that I've found something that costs way less than Laura Geller (around $7 or less at drugstores), but still offers the same functions. I'd like to see Milani continue to expand it's range of shades, and maybe make some palettes or duos! Have you tried any of these yet? Let me know what you think! :)

Throwback Video of the Week: Lights, Camera, Action!

I'm a little behind on my Throwback Video of the Week- last week was rather hectic for me! But I didn't want to miss it altogether! This past Friday I was invited to be on Great Day St. Louis (see previous post) to talk about some of my top travel beauty products! It was really fun to get to talk about makeup, but of course, it was also cool to get a behind-the-scenes look at how a different station does things! It was a big studio, with lots of staff members, and because of the nature of the show- there was so much going on! A chef, a DJ, me, and several other guests!

So for this week's Throwback Video of the Week, I wanted to show you a behind the scenes look at where I work! This video was posted back on March 5, 2010- when I was still living in the apartment, and some of the staff members have changed, but overall, it's a pretty accurate look at what happens behind the scenes on News 3 This Morning!
