Pink Eye Drama

Hey everyone! It's been a rough 24 hours here... after a watery eye much of yesterday morning (which I initially just passed off as an allergy-type symptom)... I found out I have pink eye. Basically the eye started looking more red and swollen, and the watery-ness became more yellow-ish and thick. So I decided I had to get it looked at by a doctor. It didn't take him long to diagnose it as pink eye, and said it's going around a lot. So he prescribed some antibiotic drops, and told me I'd need to lay off the contacts for a week.

My makeup-less, pink-eye "face of the day"

I actually think this might be my first ever experience with pink eye. I was off work today (pink eye is very contagious), and as the oozing that I have to blot every minute or so continues... it's not looking good for tomorrow. The eye has a red, very watery appearance, however I think keeping a cold pack on the eye on and off has helped the swelling considerably. The eye was barely open late yesterday afternoon. The downside this morning was the fact that it was totally crusted shut. From news anchoring to YouTube... being on camera & makeup are pretty big parts of the job. Needless to say, this pink eye is cramping my style BIG TIME.

Anyway... just thought I'd update you on what's going on. As I'm sure you know, I'll be back to news & video-making as soon as I possibly can. I'll make sure to take proper precautions so I don't infect my co-workers and scare the viewers. Meanwhile, blogging, tweeting, and facebooking seem to be the best ways to occupy my time.

If there's something you'd like to see me blog about, let me know! I'm thinking my next one will probably be about all the eye makeup I'm going to toss out due to contact with the pink eye. Thanks for the kind tweets & facebook comments! The words of advice are much appreciated! :)

  1. Sorry about the pink eye! I had it when I was pregnant with my 2nd child. Morning sickness on top of pink eye = DISASTER! I did find that once I started the drops my eyes cleared up within 48 hours. Using a damp washcloth in the morning will help you in the mornings to open your eye up.

  2. You know you will have to pretty much throw out everything you used eye wise from this previous week? Same thing happened to me, I had to replace everything.. luckily I have no where near as huge collection as you.. Hope you feel better soon honey! Keep ice pack on or freeze a wet wash cloth.

  3. AW, feeling bad for you! That looks like a pretty bad case. Heal quickly and don't rush back into the "biz" too early - you need time to take care of yourself!

  6. Hope your eye gets better soon...I remember that going around years ago as well, never fun! Enjoy your little time off, and know we'll be looking forward to have you back with videos! :)

  7. Make sure you toss all the eye products you have used for the past week or so (OUCH!) so as not to reinfect yourself. Hope you are on the mend soon! XO

  9. You might ask the doctor about sterilizing the used makeup. I know professional makeup artists have to on a regular basis. Might be able to save some.

  10. Sending you virtual hugs and hopes that you feel better soon! I had pink eye when I was little -- it's no fun! :( :(

  12. Aw, it did get you good. :( Poor Em. I hope the antibiotics kick in super fast. Will it be 24 hours tonight? Usually you start to see a bit of improvement in 24 hours, more in a few days. Hang in there. Take the opportunity to rest up, use lots of antibacterial lotion, throw out tissues as soon as you use them in a paper bag (so you aren't opening and closing doors and spreading it). Eyes can be such a pain in the face!!

  13. That sucks! Are you planning on tossing out makeup? That might be interesting to write about or do a video on.

  15. Make sure you clean all makeup brushes that you might have used pre-pink eye. Also, you should throw away any mascara that you may have used in the days leading up to the pink eye because using them again may re-infect your eyes. make sure to dis-infect any eye liners that you may have used with rubbing alcohol.

    Hope that helps.

  17. Feel Better!!!

And, since I did not know you wore contacts, and I just started wearing them, maybe in the future you could do a contacts and eye-makeup piece. Hope you feel better and are well FAST. Hugs.

  18. Emily, I hope you feel better soon! Keep using whatever the doctor gave you. I got pink eye from tying on MAKEUP in a store! I really hope you don't do this. If you test products, only do it on your hand. NEVER TRY ON EYELINER, MASCARA or EYESHADOW on your eye with a store sample. They are infested with bacteria. Please tell all your makeup follows to never do this!

  19. Oh no! I was just wondering when you'll have your next video up, and then I saw this...I hope you feel better soon!

  20. Sorry to hear about the pink eye. Since you wear contacts, be sure to THOROUGLY clean them before using them again...or maybe just take out a new pair and use a new lens container. Antibiotics (oral) generally take 2 days to "kick in". Be sure to finish ALL medications (oral/topical) and DO NOT stop using/taking them just because the eye looks/feels better. . Here's a link that may help: http://www.webmd.com/eye-health/tc/pinkeye-home-treatment. Get well soon, Emily!

  22. Aww, I had pink eye exactly this time last year, but it was in BOTH eyes. I was about to graduate and was freaking out since I had a big paper to write for a class. I could barely see and my eyes stinged so bad! The only relief I had was wearing sun glasses during the day LOL just take your medicine, keep icing, and it will pass in a few days, took me all weekend and a monday :p btw..Love your blogs and beauty broadcast!

  23. I hated pink eye as a child! I probably had it about a handful of times. Be sure not to rub your eyes because it has the tendency to transfer to the other eye easily. Or if you do rub your eyes, nothing is better for germ removal than washing your hands. I hope you feel better!

To the previous poster about how you contract pink eye. You get it by touching an infected surface or person and then touching your eyes. It's highly contagious but ultimately more of a nuisance than anything.

  24. aw man, pink eye is the WORST!!! i was teasing a friend about having it and sure enough, karma got me..in both eyes! i sure felt pretty goofy :)

  25. I had pink eye years ago...Yes you have to get rid of ALL eye makeup used in the past couple days..And do yourself a favor and get salve(spelling) instead of drops. I had the drops and most of it went down my face. The salve helped it clear up in about a day...and I had it in both my eyes because I am always touching my face and eyes...good luck

  29. Hi darling sorry to hear abt your pink eye. It must be due to any eye make up product which you had used over the past week. Try to find out and throw as it can reinfect you. Take a couple of days off as we want our lovely Emily back with a big bang :)
    Love n hugs, uzidear

    1. And I bet you look perfect all day every day, right? Would you mind sending us a pictures every few seconds, or maybe a live 24/7 video feed, so we can all stand in awe of your perfection? You aren't forced to read her blog or watch her videos, so do us all a favor and go back to thinking you're fabulous and the rest of us with real lives are beneath you elsewhere. And if you do choose to comment again, at least have the decency to write your name instead of showing your cowardice by hiding behind anonymity.

  43. Sorry about the pink eye Emily! Your eyes look kinda like mine now. I have glaucoma and I am allergic to the drops I have to take for it so they are continuously red. I'm glad yours will go away soon!!

  44. Feel better! I had pink eye a couple of years ago it was the worst experience ever. Something I did that was very soothing and cleared away the puss without having to dab at it was to boil some mineral water, take it off the stove, and then put your face over it with a towel over head. I couldn't stand the heat on my whole face so I made the towel cover my nose and mouth too. Best of luck to you and make sure you don't infect the other eye like I did haha

    ReplyDelete
  45. Luckily as others have said you can disinfect most of your stuff but anything liquid or gel (mascara, gel liner) you'll have to toss. The rest you can disinfect with 99% isopropyl alcohol or vodka which I'm sure you already knew. :D

  58. Warm tea bags really help draw out the infection. and when the tea bag eventually becomes cool, that helps with swelling. you could also use just a warm face towel the warm/hot water also helps draw out the infection.

I have no idea what Pink Eye is. Is it kind of like Conjunctivitis? and you said it's contagious, how do you contact it? I hope it goes away soon and that you're family don't get it too.

  63. To the Anonymous person who said that Em is a disgusting person because she blogs about her pink eye and shown a picture of it:
You definitely need a hug, some love and a new stress ball to release your tensions. Find a new hobby that is not mean and disrespectful. This is Emily's blog and she can write about everything she wants. If you want to post only about kittens in baskets open your own blog.

Emily, I hope you get well soon, I used to have pink eyes repeatedly when I was a toddler and it wasn't cool, so I am thinking of you.

  68. Oh my goodness! I just had pink eye this past weekend. I am currently in graduate school and tend to get shingles every time I am super stressed. But, my eye was completely swollen and bright red last weekend. The doctor also diagnosed me with pink eye. It is such a bummer! It totally gets in the way of makeup...and a busy schedule! On the bright side, the eye drops work VERY quickly!

and the ANONYMOUS person who is posting all of the nasty stuff- really? yes, pink eye is disgusting there's no way around it, but what you're saying is just uncalled for. Emily is a wonderful person and her blog and new vlog channel are a way for her fans to get closer to her. Emily has the right to post WHATEVER she wants and if you don't like it, then stop reading... don't continue to post nasty stuff. Emily is already sick and probably feeling lousy, so why all the hate which probably won't help her feel better? geeze, didn't your mother ever teach you "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." if not, you need to be taught REALLY quickly.

  71. I've never had pink eye, but I imagine you can't use the same mascara anymore. :/ Pink eye can really come from anything. We can't wash our hands 24/7 and bacteria is everywhere. Allergic reactions to makeup can cause the same thing, only those get as bad as the eye completely closed up.

  72. Had pink eye, it's hideous and be so careful around the kitten. You are one brave soul to post that picture girlfriend...you get high praise...and remember this too shall pass. I got it from helping in my sons kindergarten class..a little boy came to school with it and I was dismayed his mom sent him the poor darling, but I got it .... 14 of the kids got it...and I almost smacked the mom. Can you imagine not caring about your kid that much!?
