Maybelline Color Whisper Lip Colors

Hey everyone! I was just thinking about how hard it is for a brand to please everyone with a single makeup product. With mascara, it depends on your own lashes as to what formula or brush works best for you. With foundation, your skin type dictates what kind of formula will wear a long time or disappear by mid-day. But with lipstick, I feel like people have a lot of the same needs. You want something moisturizing as opposed to drying, something that wears comfortably on the lips, and is easy to apply. With such an increased interest in hybrid lipsticks/lip balms, I'm sure Maybelline felt pretty safe in launching their Color Whisper lip colors... a series of lipsticks that claim to contain "pure color pigments suspended in weightless gel."

Left to right: Lust for Blush, Pin Up Peach, and Cherry on Top

I must say, I am totally on board with the trend toward more comfortable, practical lip products. With Color Whisper, we're talking about lipsticks that give you color, but it's sheer enough to be manageable and something that can easily be applied on the go. The formula feels creamy, but not heavy. It's moisturizing, but doesn't feel like it's going to slide off the lips. Each shade I have, ranging from light to bright, seem to be very buildable in terms of their color payoff (I'll explain more in a minute). They give off a hint of shine, but it's nothing major.

Staying power isn't great, but as with a lot of products- the deeper shades seem to hang around longer on the lips than the light ones. If I'm not eating or drinking, they'll get me through a morning with no need to reapply, but after a meal I definitely want to add some more. I also like that the cap indicates what shade is inside... just makes it easier to know what I'm getting when I pull it out of a drawer. Oh, and the scent. Personally, I think the scent is awesome... they all seem to smell like Fruity Pebbles.

Lust for Blush is soft, cool pink. I like this color, but for my skintone, I prefer to wear it a bit more sheer so my lips have a slight pink tint as opposed to full on baby pink color. I just think it comes off a little more natural that way.

I like all of the shades I picked up, but Pin Up Peach is probably my favorite!  While the picture is slightly out of focus, I assure you, this color is the epitome of FRESH. It's a great coral shade, but the amount of pink also in this color keeps it from being too orange, and therefore I think makes it super wearable. If you put this color under a microscope, you might detect a hint of shimmer, but overall it's just creamy color.

Finally here's the brightest of my three colors, Cherry on Top. The outer cap of the product better indicates the color of the lipstick than the actual shade name. When I think cherry, I think red. This is definitely a magenta pink... however it has a certain softness to it. It's not full-on opaque magenta, but it can built to a nice vivid tone. Which brings me to my next point! :)

First two swatches: Lust for Blush, second two: Pin Up Peach, third two: Cherry on Top

Something I've noticed about these lip product is how buildable they are. Meaning a light sweep over the lips gives you one color, but if you add more, the shade becomes more intense. If asked if you'd rather have two lip products or one, you'd probably say, I'll take two, please! (or at least I would). Here you essentially get two looks (if not more) per product, which I think is really cool.

So what makes these different from all the other new lip products out there?

-Compared to Maybelline Baby Lips: These have more color payoff. Most of the Baby Lips shades are highly moisturizing, but sheer. Baby Lips are closer to lip balm, Color Whisper is closer to lipstick.

-Compared to Revlon Lip Butter: All around, Color Whisper shades seem to be more sheer and less shiny. I feel like Lip Butters give you one solid shade with full-on color (especially the deepest tones), so you get what you get with those. Meanwhile Color Whispers can be quite sheer, or built up to a more intense color. Both kinds feel hydrating to me.

-Compared to Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Sticks: I raved about these in the Emily Awards, and these seem to pack more moisture and hydration than Color Whisper. They may not feel as light on the lips, but they're doing more from a moisturizing standpoint- if that makes sense- and still feel super comfortable. Much like the Color Whispers, the Moisture Smooth Color Sticks have buildable color.

Alright! Hopefully that gives you a sense of what these Color Whisper lip colors are all about. Lightweight lip products that can give off a range of colors depending on how much you build them up. Extremely comfortable on the lips, non-drying, and there seems to be a large shade range available at drug/discount stores. Yes, it seems like there are lots of similar products out there, but hopefully this blog has explained some key points about Color Whispers. I'm a fan of these and would like to try more shades! :)

Daily Nuggets...
  • Some sad news- Tyler's beloved grandpa Milo passed away. We'll be attending his funeral later this week in North Dakota. Tyler told me a sweet story about when he was younger and Milo would ask for his wallet- then put some money in and give it back. His sweet spirit was clearly passed down to Tyler's dad and Tyler, too. I'm grateful for grandpa Milo's long, full life but he will be greatly missed by the family.
  • A new heating system is being installed in our house as we speak. Cupcake is no doubt hiding under something at the opposite end of the house... You know what's strange? We're expecting highs near 70 here today. That means severe weather later tonight, and then it'll cool down soon enough, I'm sure!
  • Planning to get a quick tutorial posted later today... shot it a few days ago. Seems like a long time since a tutorial has been posted on my channel!
  • I hope everyone has a good day, and don't forget to appreciate each day.

2012 Emily Awards FOTD's

Hey everyone!
Seems like a long time since I've written a blog on here that wasn't a run down of my Emily Award winning products! I want to send a huge thank you to everyone who took time to watch and share a kind comment... these videos require so much work but it is so fulfilling to find that people really look forward to them and enjoy watching them! I hope the blog posts listing the products were useful to you as well... I think those posts are easier to print off or refer to on your phone when you're out shopping.

Anyway, the point of this post is to point out the key products from each of my "looks" in the Emily Awards series. I believe someone came up with the idea during last week's Beauty Broadcast Live Ustream show (by the way, that's happening again Thursday morning at 9am CST!) From lip gloss to eyeshadow- I've had a lot of questions about what I was wearing- so here ya go! :)

This look was overall pretty natural... until you see the liner & lashes :)
I kept the hair pretty simple as well- I just did a side part and curled the ends away from my face.

Blush: The Balm Frat Boy
Eyes: LORAC Pro Palette- Lt. Bronze, Pewter, and Espresso
Lips: Mally High Shine Liquid Lip Color in Mally's Look

Obviously if you're doing a video all about eye products- you want the eyes to steal the show!
That's what I was trying to do anyway in this video. I used my bun maker for a casual updo.

Blush: The Balm Frat Boy (this is also in the Balm Jovi palette)
Eyes: The Balm Rockstar Palette - Balm Jovi- Adagio, Alice Copper, Moderato, Presto
Lips: NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Pink Rose

As a whole, I was channeling the looks I saw on the Golden Globes in this video. I saw lots of old school, glamorous curls, so I figured- why not try that with my hair!
I put my hair in velcro rollers then pulled it all to one side. Makeup-wise, I went for more of a simple, low maintenance eye with no liner in the waterline, and really not much happening on the lower lashline at all. I still went with big lashes, and a light pink lip.

Blush: Physician's Formula Happy Booster Blush- Natural
Eyes: L'oreal Infallible Shadow- Bronzed Taupe and Smoked Plum (just a little on the outer corner)
Lips: Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick in Sweet Watermelon

It's amazing how a deeper lip color can change the tone of a whole look!
After going with pink lips for the other videos, I opted for not only a deeper lip, but a pretty intense eye as well (excuse my awkward screen shots). I curled my hair all over and went with a center part for something different.

Blush: The Balm Down Boy
Eyes: The Balm Shady Lady Vol. 1 - light pink, purple, navy
Lips: Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick in Rich Raisin

Daily Nuggets...
  • We are currently without heat in the house! My little Duraflame is doing a good job for us though. Repairman yesterday didn't seem to have a clear idea of what was wrong, and another guy came today. Looks like we'll probably be getting a whole new heating system. Oh joy.
  • Went to Wal-Mart and didn't expect to find Drew Barrymore's Flower makeup line- but I did! Wowza! I bought some things to review.
  • I'm trying to reply to tweets and I'm incredibly behind due to Emily Awards consuming so much of my time for the past week. Twitter won't let me get back to some tweets from about a week ago that I was trying to answer. So if your question from last week didn't get answered- feel free to ask again.
  • I have put together a blooper/highlights video for the Emily Awards :)
  • Made chicken enchiladas for dinner- they were delightful!
  • Time for American Idol!!

Welcome to the finale of the 2012 Emily Awards! If you've been wondering about favorite brushes, skincare, nails, body, and hair products- you've come to the right place! I love the finale because it handles all of those random, yet frequently asked about areas of beauty. I also include my makeup MVP's (Most Valuable Products), as well as some other fun categories!

I am always eager to hear your feedback on the Emily Awards. What did you like? Was anything missing? I want to keep improving the Emily Awards each year, so if the videos left you with any unanswered questions, I'd love to know! I may also put together a little "behind the scenes" video with some outtakes of all of the crazy intros I shot with Tyler & Cupcake :)
Thanks so much for watching! Love you all!!!

Emily Awards 2012: LIPS!

Yay for lips! As a lip product addict who has tried lots and lots of different products, I'm rather picky when it comes to naming favorites! We all know it's not just about how pretty a particular product looks as soon as you apply it to your lips- but also how long it wears and how comfortable it feels.  I hope you discover some new favorites in this portion of the Emily Awards!

Guess what? It's not over yet! The final part of the awards is the Finale!
If you want to know about favorites for brushes, tools, skincare, body, hair, and nails...
plus the MVPs (Most Valuable Products)... you must tune in!
Look for the Emily Awards Finale Monday on Beauty Broadcast!

Emily Awards 2012: EYES!

Time for part two of the Emily Awards 2012! I've tried a lot of new eye products this year, and I am so excited for you to see my picks. When choosing favorites, color and variety is important, but I also look for products that are easy to use, deliver on their claims, and have good staying power. Repeat winners continue to be tested against new products, so if they continue to come out on top, you know they are something special! This video offers both old favorites, and a lot of great new things. Hope you enjoy it, and look for the Emily Awards for Lips next! :)

Emily Awards 2012: FACE!

Hey everyone! The Emily Awards are back again! I hope you enjoyed the silly intro this year- Tyler and I spent a lot of time on that :) Gotta give my assistant Cupcake a little credit, too. In case you're not familiar with the Emily Awards, basically these are all of my favorite products of the past year. These awards began with just one video back in 2008, and now I do multiple videos each year so I can provide more details, and favorites for both high end and drugstore categories. Basically, I like to pretend that I work for Allure magazine and really go crazy with it.

My first video focuses on favorite face products, and keep in mind that I may not have a favorite in every single category. It's gotta be awesome (in my opinion) to make the list! :) I hope this list makes it easy for you to keep track of your favorites and refer to it if you're on the go. Keep checking in with my YouTube channel for new videos in this series, and I'll also update Twitter and Facebook when something new is posted.

FOTD: Tarte Carried Away Kit

Hello friends! When I posted my video highlighting various holiday palettes, there was a lot of interest in the Carried Away set from Tarte. So I thought I'd use it for today's makeup look!

The set comes in a great roll-up bag, and contains lip glosses, an eyeshadow palette, a brush, a blush, a finishing powder, and mascara. For a closer look at those things, check out the video I linked to above!

The eyeshadow palette has been lots of fun to play with! As you can see, there are many different looks you can create, and with the shadows divided into quads, it's easy to visualize how to use them- not that you can't mix it up and play with different colors.

I went for a dusty lavender look using mostly this quad. I went all over the lid with the shade in the upper right, and highlighted the inner corner with the light sparkly shade on the upper left. I used the deep matte purple in the outer corner, the crease, and under the eye, and blended out the border of the dark shade with the golden/lavender color on the lower left. I did a light highlight under the brow with a light pink elsewhere in the palette.

For the rest of the eyes I used Maybelline Master Drama eyeliner in Midnight Master (black) on the upper lashline and the waterline. I finished off the look with Tarte's MultiplEYE lash primer and Cover Girl Clump Crusher mascara. Then I used Maybelline Lash Discovery mascara on the lower lashes.

I absolutely LOVE the Amazonian Clay blush that's included in this kit. It's a gorgeous rose color with a little bit of shimmer called Adventurous.

I layered a couple of the Tarte Maracuja lip glosses- these shades are creamy with no shimmer. They're kind of sheer but really shiny. The mauve shade is called Jena and the more neutral/nude color is Casey.

Hope you enjoyed the look! I think these shades of purple are really easy to wear... instead of being a really pure purple shade, they have a little softer tone. These Tarte shadows do have some fallout, so it's important to tap off your brush when you apply them, but other than that, they are very easy to blend and are really nicely pigmented.

Benefit World Famous Neutrals Kits

Hey everyone! It's been a big eyeshadow day for me!
I posted a video reviewing The Balm's Meet Matt(e) Nude palette, and I also wanted to share this blog post on the Benefit World Famous Neutrals kits. They're $30 each at Sephora.com, and while I have the "Most Glamorous Nudes Ever" and "Sexiest Nudes Ever", there's another one available called "Easiest Nudes Ever". The website says they contain "creaseless creams" and "new longwear powder shadows". These were sent to me for review from Benefit, and at first glance I was super excited. Benefit's packaging is always nice, and these little eye kits looks like books from the outside and are super cute.

The kits open up to reveal fold-out tips & tricks which share daytime and "playtime" instructions, as well as a small mirror. There are four MAC eyeshadow-sized pans of powder shadow in each, as well as slots for two cream shadows with twist-off lids that lift out of the palette.

This is the "Most Glamorous Nudes Ever" kit, and the cream shadows are showing up a bit darker in the palette than they actually appear when you apply them (see the swatches below). They have an incredibly creamy feel... more so than probably any other cream shadow I've used. The top color- "Birthday Suit"- is gorgeous, and I love the coppery tone to "My 2 Cents" is really pretty as well. They apply with so much pigment, but the staying power is where I have an issue- they don't dry to a totally smudge-free finish. They can be totally smudged and rubbed away... and now that we have the budge-proof Maybelline Color Tattoos, we all know how nice it is to have long wearing cream shadows. It's kind of sad to me that you have to cover up these beautiful cream shades with a powder in order to get a longer wearing look. Assuming you do that, the look will indeed last (it did for me).

The powder shadows are nice, but nothing unique. They're pigmented, but not to the point of feeling rich and creamy (like some really nicely textured powder shadows do). The peachy/gold called "It's Complicated" is the most eye-catching one of the bunch, in my opinion.

The "World's Sexiest Nudes Ever" kit takes on a purple tone. The cream shadows have the same delightfully creamy, yet not long-wearing formula- and I must say, I love the color of the lighter one called "Bikini-tini". It's a great shimmery nude. The charcoal shade called "Holy Smokes!" is a great smokey eye base and looks really nice paired with the ultra metallic silvery powder called "Blingo!" I wish they would've included at least one deeper powder shadow so you could really contour with this kit.

As with the other kit, these shades are all pretty, but not necessarily unique. If you are interested in buying these, just keep in mind that you'll have the best staying power if you layer the powders over the creams. I feel like they're kind of overpriced, but if you like the configurations, you can probably find similar cream and powder shadows in the drugstore. (Maybelline Color Tattoos, Wet n Wild eyeshadows... just off the top of my head).

Maybelline the Rocket Volum' Express Mascara

Hey everyone! Just wanted to post a quick review on Maybelline's newest mascara- the Rocket. It claims to give "the most explosive, beautiful lashes ever!" While I don't think I want my lashes to be capable of exploding, some length and volume would be nice.

The large brush with short bristles and a blunt tip reminds me a lot of Cover Girl Lash Blast, but the formula applies with a much heavier feel. The mascara feels thick and does build length and thickness quickly on the lashes, but doesn't do so well with separation. Meanwhile I find Cover Girl Lash Blast to be one of the least clump-prone mascaras I've tried.

While it seems like lots of newer mascaras tend to feel lighter and more flexible on the lashes, this mascara made my lashes feel so hard and brittle once it dried. I guess I've gotten used to mascaras making my lashes feel more like, well, lashes... so I really noticed the brittle feel that this mascara gave me. On the up-side, this mascara didn't flake or smudge at all on me.

Overall, this isn't the worst mascara I've ever tried, but it's definitely not the best and I don't plan to repurchase it. I've tried many other mascaras (Cover Girl Lash Blast, Almay Get Up and Grow, L'oreal Double Extend), that give me length and thickness, while ALSO separating the lashes more... giving me the look of more lashes. Perhaps this mascara will improve and feel less heavy as I continue to use it, but for now it's just pretty average for me.

Daily Nuggets...

There's also been talk about moving it from Thursday to Saturday morning... any feedback on that?

Meanwhile I thought I'd do a Face of the Day post on the look I was wearing during today's BlogTV!

  • Topic of the Day (This week's is Foundation... I'll be covering new foundations, the best for different skin types, and my current favorites)
  • Live Tutorial (This week I'll demonstrate my tips for false lashes!)
  • Grab Bag Reviews (I'll literally reach into a bag & review whatever I grab!)
  • Shop my Stash! (Many people are resolving to use the makeup they have-- this will be my weekly roundup of rediscovered products I'm working to use up!)
  • Weekly Winner! I'm giving away a $50 Sephora Gift Card to the first person in the chat who correctly answers my question of the week!

This is going to be so much fun!! Hope you'll be able to join me tomorrow for my first episode of Beauty Broadcast Live!! :)

2013 Resolutions!

Happy 2013 Everyone!!!

I figured I should map out some resolutions for myself! I usually have some every year, but I'm not always good about keeping them. This year as a whole I'm resolving to live a more balanced life and I really feel it will be possible with my career changes. I am so excited for what this year holds, and the ability to focus on Beauty Broadcast related tasks and opportunities has me in such a continually excited state of mind.

On a personal level, I want to take better care of myself... regularly working out, eating right, and getting enough sleep. In the past, time has been my biggest obstacle for all of those things, so I truly feel like I can accomplish them this year. Also, getting my social life back! The ability to spend more time with Tyler, and other family members and friends is something that's already taking shape naturally just with the changes in my lifestyle. It's my hope that the ability to control my own schedule will make me more productive and help me accomplish many new things with Beauty Broadcast as well.

I thought it might also be fun to come up with some specific beauty resolutions, on top of my personal goals! I loved reading through the posts on the Beauty Broadcast Facebook Page. Here are some of my resolutions, not as one who makes videos on YouTube, but just as a makeup user in general.
  • Staying organized is the key to knowing what you have and using what you have, in my opinion. I hope to stay on top of my collection, continually "shopping my stash" in an effort to use up what I have... not falling into a makeup rut, using the same products day after day.
  • Since I'm not doing makeup for HD TV news everyday, I can have more fun with my makeup looks. I want to strive for different looks or techniques each day.
  • I want to pay more attention to my skin from an inside out perspective. Water and nutrition have a big impact on your complexion and I feel like I tend to forget about that.
  • Ever since my pink eye situation in 2012, I've been very conscientious about sanitizing my makeup and beauty supplies and I just want to continue that in the new year! This video has tons of tips!

Daily Nuggets
  • Tyler had the day off from work so we shot this video. Hope you like it!
  • We also picked up some groceries and the store was surprisingly calm! Just the way I like it!
  • Been bouncing around the various college bowl games on TV this afternoon... now watching the Rose Bowl.
  • Birds have been harassing the wreath on the front door and Cupcake has been closely monitoring that situation.
  • I just got done with this yoga video. My abs are tired!!
