I know I'm not the only makeup lover who is rotating through multiple mascaras at any given time. You're always on the quest for the perfect one, right? Me too. I thought I'd give you a little recap on some mascaras I've been trying recently and let you know what worked for me and what didn't. Keep in mind this isn't an "all time" best & worst list-- just giving you an update on what I've been using lately. Just like the hair on your head responds differently to products depending on hair type-- your lashes might respond differently to mascaras depending on your lash type. My lashes are very straight (they practically want to point down), they're not incredibly long, and they're not very thick either. I also suffer from HLE (Husband Lash Envy ;), because his are the exact opposite of mine. Isn't it frustrating when dudes are blessed with perfect lashes? Anyway, I expect a lot out of my mascaras! And I frequently wear false eyelashes, so that heightens my expectations even more. So let's look at some mascaras- both high end and drugstore- and see how they did!
Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara ($4.99, Ulta)
This is probably my biggest mascara success story lately. I talked about it in my latest Best in Beauty video, but this mascara has been great from the first use. The brush is loaded with rubber bristles, and I love that it even has bristles right at the tip to help you fan out the lashes, and really get to each one. It builds wonderful length and volume and is rather buildable, but I do enjoy the fact that it doesn't take me long to get the big lashes I'm after without getting clumpy. I have noticed a few flakes occasionally, but it doesn't happen every time I wear it, so I can't really say I'm seeing a pattern. LOVE this stuff!
Mally Instant Impact Mascara ($30 for 2, QVC.com)
If you keep up with my videos, you know I'm wild about the original Mally Volumizing mascara in the white tube. But I recently got this new kind in a Mally Today's Special Value kit from QVC, and I must say, I really like it! It's a rubber bristle brush, and it kind of looks like a caterpillar I used to draw as a kid- it has 6 little rounded segments. It builds really great length for me, but the one downside is that I really have to spend some time getting excess product off of the brush so I don't overload my lashes. That may change as I use this one more. I'm not sure if it's quite as good as Mally's original, but it's definitely among my recent mascara "hits".
Cover Girl Clump Crusher- Water Resistant Formula ($6, Drug/Discount Stores)
I'm not one who wears waterproof/resistant mascaras on a regular basis, but if I'm taking part in a really special event, I like to use something that I know isn't going to budge. So this was what I used when I went to IMATS! (alongside some falsies... you know me!) I know the other Lash Blast varieties are very good about not smudging and flaking, and brides I've made up have had very good luck with the waterproof kind. So I got one for myself, and I loved it! I just wanted something that would last... I didn't necessarily think I'd be in tears, but several of you actually did make me cry (happy) tears. I remember saying "we're having a moment!!" haha. Anyway, I love that this does not clump, builds nice length, and just plain doesn't move until you go to remove it. I'd also like to point out that unlike a lot of waterproof mascaras... this isn't that hard to remove!! I didn't feel like I lost lashes in the process, so that's great! Major win for this mascara.
Diorshow New Look Mascara ($28.50, sephora.com)
I got this as part of a holiday set- it came with a mini eyeshadow palette. I remember not loving it so much at first and set it aside for quite some time. You might say- you got that around the holidays... isn't it time to toss it? Well, I feel like if I haven't been opening it continuously & inviting bacteria inside, it can go a little longer than the typical 3-month mascara lifespan. This brush has rubber bristles and is quite small. It's super easy to use, and is very thickening on the lashes. Less is more with this product- it can look TOO thick with lots of coats, but really nice with just one or two. I don't love it to the extent that I would re-purchase, but it performed well and is still a "hit" for me.
NYC High Definition Volume Mascara ($4.99, Drug/Discount stores)
What are the odds of me having five mascara hits- and they all have rubber bristle brushes? It typically isn't my favorite brush style, but these have been working for me! This one has fairly short bristles all the way around, and then one row of longer bristles that almost act as a comb to de-clump the lashes. I really like that! I wish the end wasn't so blunt (it seems more brands are putting bristles on the tip, which is nice). This is another mascara that I've had in my stash for awhile... I thought it was decent at first, but really like it now. It's great for length and separation, and the look of more lashes. Don't use too much, or you will get what I refer to as "funky ends"- where the mascara has built tips on your lashes that are pointing out in different directions. It does not look normal. Otherwise- I really like this one!
The Misses :(
Revlon PhotoReady 3D Volume Mascara ($7, Drug/Discount stores)
Perhaps you saw this one in action in my Revlon 1-Brand Tutorial. While every square centimeter of this brush (even the tip) is loaded with rubber bristles, this just didn't do much for my lashes. It must be an issue with the formula, because it actually felt like it was weighing my lashes down and straightening them out. Maybe a person with a lot of naturally curled lashes would have a different experience, but this one is not for me.
Wet n Wild Mega Volume Mascara ($2.99, Drug/Discount stores)
I know MakeupGeek has raved about this one, but unfortunately I did not enjoy it. It's a traditional bristle brush, and the bristles spiral around the wand. I don't like the amount of space between bristles, because I don't feel like it really gets product on every single lash like bristles that are more spikey, or at least closer together. On the upside, it doesn't clump. But I don't feel like it does anything for my short, sparse lashes! It's like the brush doesn't deposit enough on the lashes to give me the big lashes I want.
Wet n Wild Mega Protein Mascara ($2.99, Drug/Discount stores)
I wish I loved Wet n Wild mascaras as much as I love the eyeshadows! Unfortunately, this mascara performed almost exactly the same for me as Mega Volume. It's the same style of brush, but just a teeny bit smaller. This didn't make my lashes "mega" anything. Even as I applied more product and tried to build it up, my lashes just weren't having it. That's good when it comes to clumping, but my lashes need more help than this mascara can provide.
Buxom Lash Mascara ($19 for full size, sephora.com)
I have the mini size of this mascara, and I think the brush looks awesome! It's a rubber bristle brush and has tons of bristles. But after trying multiple Sephora Lash Stash sets which contain lots of mini mascaras- I find that the mascaras with giant brushes don't always work as well in the mini tubes. Has anyone else noticed this? It's like it can't get quite enough product on it or something. I felt like this mascara just didn't plump the lashes up enough. Again- it could be the fact that I have the mini size, but it's not doing it for me. Since this was decent for me in terms of defining the lashes- this might be a good one for a person with a lot of natural thickness.
Holy cow! What a long post! What mascaras have you been loving lately? Any duds? Let me know!
