Recent Mascara Hits & Misses

Hey everyone!
I know I'm not the only makeup lover who is rotating through multiple mascaras at any given time. You're always on the quest for the perfect one, right? Me too. I thought I'd give you a little recap on some mascaras I've been trying recently and let you know what worked for me and what didn't. Keep in mind this isn't an "all time" best & worst list-- just giving you an update on what I've been using lately. Just like the hair on your head responds differently to products depending on hair type-- your lashes might respond differently to mascaras depending on your lash type. My lashes are very straight (they practically want to point down), they're not incredibly long, and they're not very thick either. I also suffer from HLE (Husband Lash Envy ;), because his are the exact opposite of mine. Isn't it frustrating when dudes are blessed with perfect lashes? Anyway, I expect a lot out of my mascaras! And I frequently wear false eyelashes, so that heightens my expectations even more. So let's look at some mascaras- both high end and drugstore- and see how they did!

The Hits!

Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara ($4.99, Ulta)
This is probably my biggest mascara success story lately. I talked about it in my latest Best in Beauty video, but this mascara has been great from the first use. The brush is loaded with rubber bristles, and I love that it even has bristles right at the tip to help you fan out the lashes, and really get to each one. It builds wonderful length and volume and is rather buildable, but I do enjoy the fact that it doesn't take me long to get the big lashes I'm after without getting clumpy. I have noticed a few flakes occasionally, but it doesn't happen every time I wear it, so I can't really say I'm seeing a pattern. LOVE this stuff!

Mally Instant Impact Mascara ($30 for 2, QVC.com)
If you keep up with my videos,  you know I'm wild about the original Mally Volumizing mascara in the white tube. But I recently got this new kind in a Mally Today's Special Value kit from QVC, and I must say, I really like it! It's a rubber bristle brush, and it kind of looks like a caterpillar I used to draw as a kid- it has 6 little rounded segments. It builds really great length for me, but the one downside is that I really have to spend some time getting excess product off of the brush so I don't overload my lashes. That may change as I use this one more. I'm not sure if it's quite as good as Mally's original, but it's definitely among my recent mascara "hits".

Cover Girl Clump Crusher- Water Resistant Formula ($6, Drug/Discount Stores)
I'm not one who wears waterproof/resistant mascaras on a regular basis, but if I'm taking part in a really special event, I like to use something that I know isn't going to budge. So this was what I used when I went to IMATS! (alongside some falsies... you know me!) I know the other Lash Blast varieties are very good about not smudging and flaking, and brides I've made up have had very good luck with the waterproof kind. So I got one for myself, and I loved it! I just wanted something that would last... I didn't necessarily think I'd be in tears, but several of you actually did make me cry (happy) tears. I remember saying "we're having a moment!!" haha. Anyway, I love that this does not clump, builds nice length, and just plain doesn't move until you go to remove it. I'd also like to point out that unlike a lot of waterproof mascaras... this isn't that hard to remove!! I didn't feel like I lost lashes in the process, so that's great! Major win for this mascara.

Diorshow New Look Mascara ($28.50, sephora.com)
I got this as part of a holiday set- it came with a mini eyeshadow palette. I remember not loving it so much at first and set it aside for quite some time. You might say- you got that around the holidays... isn't it time to toss it? Well, I feel like if I haven't been opening it continuously & inviting bacteria inside, it can go a little longer than the typical 3-month mascara lifespan. This brush has rubber bristles and is quite small. It's super easy to use, and is very thickening on the lashes. Less is more with this product- it can look TOO thick with lots of coats, but really nice with just one or two. I don't love it to the extent that I would re-purchase, but it performed well and is still a "hit" for me.

NYC High Definition Volume Mascara ($4.99, Drug/Discount stores)
What are the odds of me having five mascara hits- and they all have rubber bristle brushes? It typically isn't my favorite brush style, but these have been working for me! This one has fairly short bristles all the way around, and then one row of longer bristles that almost act as a comb to de-clump the lashes. I really like that! I wish the end wasn't so blunt (it seems more brands are putting bristles on the tip, which is nice). This is another mascara that I've had in my stash for awhile... I thought it was decent at first, but really like it now. It's great for length and separation, and the look of more lashes. Don't use too much, or you will get what I refer to as "funky ends"- where the mascara has built tips on your lashes that are pointing out in different directions. It does not look normal. Otherwise- I really like this one!

The Misses :(

Revlon PhotoReady 3D Volume Mascara ($7, Drug/Discount stores)
Perhaps you saw this one in action in my Revlon 1-Brand Tutorial. While every square centimeter of this brush (even the tip) is loaded with rubber bristles, this just didn't do much for my lashes. It must be an issue with the formula, because it actually felt like it was weighing my lashes down and straightening them out. Maybe a person with a lot of naturally curled lashes would have a different experience, but this one is not for me.

Wet n Wild Mega Volume Mascara ($2.99, Drug/Discount stores)
I know MakeupGeek has raved about this one, but unfortunately I did not enjoy it. It's a traditional bristle brush, and the bristles spiral around the wand. I don't like the amount of space between bristles, because I don't feel like it really gets product on every single lash like bristles that are more spikey, or at least closer together. On the upside, it doesn't clump. But I don't feel like it does anything for my short, sparse lashes! It's like the brush doesn't deposit enough on the lashes to give me the big lashes I want.

Wet n Wild Mega Protein Mascara ($2.99, Drug/Discount stores)
I wish I loved Wet n Wild mascaras as much as I love the eyeshadows! Unfortunately, this mascara performed almost exactly the same for me as Mega Volume. It's the same style of brush, but just a teeny bit smaller. This didn't make my lashes "mega" anything. Even as I applied more product and tried to build it up, my lashes just weren't having it. That's good when it comes to clumping, but my lashes need more help than this mascara can provide.

Buxom Lash Mascara ($19 for full size, sephora.com)
I have the mini size of this mascara, and I think the brush looks awesome! It's a rubber bristle brush and has tons of bristles. But after trying multiple Sephora Lash Stash sets which contain lots of mini mascaras- I find that the mascaras with giant brushes don't always work as well in the mini tubes. Has anyone else noticed this? It's like it can't get quite enough product on it or something. I felt like this mascara just didn't plump the lashes up enough. Again- it could be the fact that I have the mini size, but it's not doing it for me. Since this was decent for me in terms of defining the lashes- this might be a good one for a person with a lot of natural thickness.

Holy cow! What a long post! What mascaras have you been loving lately? Any duds? Let me know!

Daily Nuggets...
  • We're expecting some storms this evening, and had a little one this afternoon. Cupcake is on alert... did you know she's a part-time, amateur meteorologist?
  • Got some groceries & new Equate face wash cloths (dupe for Olay)... can't stand to be out of those!
  • Was reading a Carrie Underwood article and she says she does all of her own makeup on tour. Add that to the list of reasons why I love Carrie Underwood!
  • Spent hours editing my IMATS vlog yesterday & it's still not quite done! I think it's so precious to have the experience on camera. Thanks to everyone who tweeted & facebooked me pictures. It'll be coming tomorrow!
  • (EDIT) Ooops! Almost forgot that tomorrow is Beauty Broadcast Live day!! 9am CST on my beautyvlogcast channel. It'll come up in your subscriptions list when it's live! :)

  1. I've been a good makeup user and have only used 3 mascaras during the same period!

Revlon Lash Fantasy-- I love this mascara and primer so much!

CG Clump Crusher- I hated the original Lash Blast but love this mascara. My new HG. It does everything Lash Fantasy does but in 1 step instead of 2.

L'Oreal Black Smoke mascara- I'm not digging this one. You can't tell it applies matte and it clumps too much.

  2. Thanks for these detailed reviews! I almost bought the Essence mascara at Ulta this weekend after hearing your rave, but it really bugged me that it doesn't come in sealed packaging. Did that bother you? It's not so much that someone might have used it, but if people open it to look at the brush, etc., that it might go bad more quickly. I'll be curious how your tube holds up.

  3. Thanks for the great reviews. I can so agree on the big brushes in the mini tubes, doesn't work! I got Benefit's They're Real in the mini size and it just clumped up after 3 times of putting the wand back into the tube. The Buxom one LOOKS like it would be awesome. Ashame! Thanks again Emily!

  4. I love the Buxom mascara. It never gets clumpy but still gives decent length for me. I want to love CG clump crusher, but it flakes worse than any other mascara I've tried. My favorite right now is Jordana Best Lash Extreme.

  5. My favorite mascaras at the moment are L'Oreal Volume Million Lashes (really seperates and lengthens my lashes), and Maybelline The Falsies (the best mascara for dramatic lashes - lengthens, volumizes and looks just all around great!)

  6. I think I will try the Covergirl Clump Crusher next time I need mascara. Not loving the Tarte lights camera action or Benefits Theyre Real. Makes my lashes look scary fake and I like more seperation than they give. One coat of the Benefit gives my lashes those funky ends you talk about. Got my first pair of false lashes today! The Salon Perfect Demi Wispies. Can't wait to try them soon!

  7. Try the waterproof version of the revlon mascara. I think you'll like it better! I pretty much can't wear any non-waterproof mascara because my lashes just don't hold the curl then.

  8. I've been going back and forth between 2 different mascaras lately.

Almay Get up and Grow- LOVE this mascara!! Does everything I want it to do. (doesn't clump, lengthens, volumizes etc)

Covergirl Clump Crusher- Didn't like the Lash Blast Volume, but this one is awesome!! Really enjoying it!

As soon as those two are empty (which they are pretty close) I'm going to open my Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Msacara! Excited about that one :) Hopefully, it will be as good as Almay! :)

Thanks for the post, loved it as always!! :)

  9. I recently went to Sephora and bought some smaller samples. I've wanted to try Benefit's They're Real mascara for some time and was excited to see a smaller sample size to test. I also wanted to try a primer from Tarte so I got a sample pack that included their Gifted mascara. I'm very glad I got these as smaller, less expensive samples because I liked Benefit's mascara at first, but by the end of the day, my lashes felt clumpy and almost sticky. Gifted, however, may be my new favorite mascara. They looked great and felt so comfortable. Ironically, I wasn't crazy about the primer I wanted to buy either. Gotta love those accidental discoveries!

  10. I agree about the Wet N Wild Mega Volume and the Buxom. I know Marlena raved about the WnW, but I disliked it. And my lashes are naturally long, but blonde. I also agree about the minis. The first time I tried the purple Tarte mascara, it was a mini, and I did not like it. I purchased the full size when it was $10 at ulta last month, and I LOVE it. Funny how that happens. :)

  11. Awesome post! I'd love to hear what you think about the Maybelline Volum' Express mascaras (Colossal, One by One, Falsies, etc)! Could you do a post comparing those?

    ReplyDelete
  12. The only mascara that I have ever been able to use with consistent success without flaking, weighing down my lashes, feeling dry or clumpy, or sticky...has been Maybelline Volum Express and Maybelline Lash Stiletto. I've played with using them together, doing a coat or two of Stiletto, followed by the Volum Express, and I've gotten some pretty stellar looking lashes that way. I've found that Covergirl mascara burns my eyes, and other drugstore brands just don't give me the volume and length that Maybelline does. Now, with that being said, I did try the Maybelline Illegal Length and it was a magnificent bust. I found it to be very flaky, and the fibers would get lodged in my eyeball and it just wasn't fun.
I have tried a few high end mascaras, and I just don't feel as though they are as good for me as Maybelline's Volum Express. I can honestly say that is the only beauty product that I have remained loyal to over the years and that I consistently buy over and over again.

  14. Lately I've been using the Covergirl Clump Crusher in "very black" as the first coat on my upper lashes to separate and coat each lash. Then I add a coat of Maybelline Falsies Flared mascara in "blackest black" on top to give my lashes length and density. For my lower lashes I decided to try Maybelline Great Lash again after years of dismissing it, because it has a small brush and comes in a dark brown color which I prefer on the lower lashes. Ya know how they tell you not to pump your wand because it will dry out your product faster? I pump it before every use, then blow on the wand before applying. This formula is so wet, I forgot the reason why I hated this mascara before. Now I remember. I just keep hoping it'll dry out soon and I can settle into a mascara routine that doesn't involve a million q-tips to clean up the excess. <3

  15. I have been loving Jordana - Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara lately. It adds length and some serious volume! It's only like $2.99 USD too. For reference, my all time fav's are CG lash blast, Tarte lights camera lashes & Benefit They're real :)

  16. I recently bought 2 new mascara's: Almay Get up and Grow and L'Oreal Volume Million Lashes but didn't love either of them :( Maybe I will give Clump Crusher a try as well as the Essence- if Ulta has it in stock. Great post! I also appreciate everyone elses's feedback and suggestions.

  17. I've been having some good luck with mascara lately. The CG clump crusher is nice, but not crazy good. I like it for my bottom lashes better, because it seperates with no clumps and has decent length, not much volume.

I've been really liking the Too Faced LashGasm mascara, as well. I have the mini, from the Beauty Editors darlings collection. It lengthens a bit, seperates, and adds a little volume. Great natural mascara, or a good base mascara, since I am a fan of layering mascara.

My last fave is the Maybelling Rocket mascara. I usually despise Maybelline mascaras, but I ended up loving this one. ( Rubber bristles are my favorite, all the mascaras I'm mentioning have them, and I think that's why I like this particular Maybelline mascara ) It offers a ton of volume, and if you focus it on the tips of your lashes, you get great length without getting funky ends.

I have short, sparse lashes as well and am always checking out outher peoples long natural lashes in envy lol. I've been using these three mascaras together, and am really happy with the results!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I suffer from Boyfriend Lash Envy :) His are long and naturally curled too!
I loved Clump Crusher in the regular formula for the first month, but then it dried out on me. I can usually get about 3 months out of a mascara, so that was disappointing since I enjoyed using it so much. I've been loving the L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes in the gold tube. My HG mascara is the Maybelline Colossal Volume Express (yellow tube with purple lettering).
Since you liked that NYC mascara, you should try the one in the pink tube. I believe it's called Big and Bold.

  19. Diorshow is one of my all time favourite mascaras - it just doesn't fail. Thanks for these!

  20. My favorite right now is Eyeko's Curvy brush mascara. The wand kind of freaked me out a bit at first (it's the little kid caterpillar kind), but I love how it makes my lashes look!

    ReplyDelete
  21. The only mascara I've used for over two years is Tarte's Lights Camera Splashes...I've even looked for cheaper dupes but this one remains my absolute favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love, love, love the Buxom mascara, but I didn't really like it in the mini size. I have to agree with you, I'm not a huge fan of big mascara brushes on short wands. I'm also using the Cover Girl Clump Crusher mascara and really like it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have using the Maybelline Cat Eyes mascara lately, and I have to say that I am in love. It is the closest I have to to having a "falsies" look from a mascara. It doesn't clump, flake, and it does an amazing job of lengthening and thickening. Also, the Tarte Lights Camera Lashes, and the new Maybelline Rocket Booster mascara are worth a mention for building when you use two different types like I do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am really enjoying Maybelline Falsies and Covergirl Professional (w/curved brush) at the moment. I switch between the two, but I am always rotating Maybelline mascaras. I love Colossal, Colossal Cat Eye and One by One in addition to Falsies. I tried the mini Buxom, don't remember how I got my hands on it, haha, but I really liked it. I don't generally care for rubber bristles (if you didn't notice in my preferences above, lol) but that Buxom mascara worked nicely for me. I would never spend that much on mascara, something it seems I am purchasing so frequently and since I just love several drugstore varieties. Seems like it would be such a waste. I do, however, purchase Clinique High Impact during Bonus time. :)

  25. i agree about the buxom mascara. i also have the mini size, but don't know if that affects it or not. i haven't had any problems with any of the other ones i've used yet from the sephora lash stash, but that's the only one i've tried with a brush that big.

my recent favourite is tarte lights camera lashes... i really want to try the amazonian clay one!

    ReplyDelete
  26. i love maybellines line stiletto illegal length..very natural looks, doesnt overweigh the lashes, long, full...not a lot of volume, just VERY natural. first time i used it i got those weird ends you're talking about, but never again and ive been using it every day

i usually layer it with l'oreal voluminous the brush looks very full and "fluffy-doesnt give 12 times the volume like it claims, but definitely nice big volume, really nice at separating, doesnt pack on excess amounts of product...

thats my secret combo i guess lol hope you try it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love Buxom lash! It's one of my top favorites. It has a small learning curve though, if you make a zigzag motion as you swipe, you should get the most definition. (I know, mascara shouldn't need a learning curve XD). I picked up Almay One coat get up & grow, I'm liking it so far!

  28. Hi!! I was stuck in a mascara rut for a while. I just wasn't loving anything, but I recently got a tube of Buxom Sculpted Lash in a pop sugar box and I LOVE it!! Over Easter weekend I went to a closeout store and stocked up on my favorite mascara, Loreal Lash Out!!! This is my all time holy grail mascara. I also got a tube of Maybelline Lash Stiletto there and it is not bad.

  29. Disagree with your Clump Crusher recommendation. I don't like it at all. I have long lashes and it does nothing.
LOREAL Telescopic, Carbon Black is the best mascarra for drug store brand.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Disagree with your CG Clump Crusher recommendation.
You missed the mark on that one and should be recomending LOREAL Telescopic, Carbon Black

  31. I have been on an endless search for the perfect mascara. So many fails, I had resorted to using 2 maybe 3 different mascaras at a time to get the perfect look. Until I found L'oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions. I am so in love with this mascara. The wand grips my lashes and fans them out. They look so long and full. I absolutely recommend this mascara!

  32. The Revlon 3-D Volume mascara isn't great alone but it is amazing when it is used as a layering mascara. I absolutely dislike the mascara but after using the Maybelline The Falsies in conjunction with the Revlon mascara, it is amazing.

  33. L'Oreal Voluminous Power Volume has got to be the flakiest mascara of all time, and it started flaking right away, which is sad because I liked the volume I got from it, but the flaking makes it unusable for me.
However, I have been really happy with the Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous Waterproof Mascara, while I don't get a lot of length from it, I do get nice volume and no flakes at all.

  34. I have actually been really liking Too Faced Lashgasm mascara lately. I bought a Too Faced beauty kit with small samples of all of their best selling products and I find this really boosts my lashes. My birthday is next month and I asked for the Too Faced Better Than False Lashes set. At $39 it is a bit pricey for me to spend at the moment, but I hope I get it! Can't wait to try it!

  35. Great post!!! I love the comparisons! I really like Essence mascaras! I have one (I forget which one) and I love it! I am going to have to try the one you featured!

  36. Just tried Double Extend from a recommendation from a friend. I have the exact same description of eyelashes you gave and have tried MANY biggest issues is always flaking and it makes my look like I have been crying : (. Double extend is the BEST and I wore it for the first time and got multiple compliments from people who see me everyday and I NEVER wear makeup and they all said it made my eyes look like I had extensions - mostly because I HAVE so sparse eyelashes.
    Just thought I would share.

  37. X-Nay on the Maybelline The Falsies. Soo disappointed in that one because it is too drying for me and makes my lashes STIFF!! Hate that!!! I LOVE the one you suggested awhile ago that I would have never tried without your advice and that is the ALMAY Get Up And Grow. It is the best out of all the brands I have tried because it is soft and does not leave my lashes crusty. I have never tried any other Almay products. Have you???

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love Jordanna, but it can produce funky ends. I never knew what to call the condition.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am currently using 4 mascaras.

Almay Get Up & Grow - Love this one! I feel like it gets all my lashes. Only "issue" is I have to be extra careful on my inner corners or I get mascara on my eyeshadow. Maybe I apply it wrong or something.

Rimmel Lash Accelerator - I really like the brush on this one. It adds alot of length and separates them.

Maybelline Lash Discovery - Love it for lower lashes.

Loreal Voluminous Original - Not a fan of this one, I hate when you take out a mascara and the brush is filled with clumps of product. I thought the longer I used the better it would get but that isnt the case.

I definitely want to try Clump Crusher next!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I finally decided that I do like the Revlon PhotoReady 3D Volume Mascara. I think you have to really wiggle the brush in there to get product on your lashes.

I don't love this particular mascara so wouldn't run out to buy it, but at least I can use it up.

  42. At first I thought the Buxom mascara wand was too big, but I kept using. I have gotten used to the bigger brush and am constantly grabbing for instead of the medium sized brush mascaras. I think it will grow on you and will really like it!

  43. Loreal Double Extend beauty tubes.... Sucks. You curl lashes apply base coat and then the "tubes" once you get the tubes on your lashes stick together and become stick straight. Also I know a lot if people like the fact it just comes off with water but that's actually less conveinient for those of us who use wipes to remove makeup. If I wash my face twice a day it will be a desert! Loreal false fiber lashes (in the gold tube) I don't remember the exact name. When I first purchased it I was like omg this is waaaay too dry. I set it aside and didn't use it again. Then one day I decided to give it a try and I actual like it the second time around and have added it to my rotation! Lastly Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes. I got a trial tube from Sephora. I usually hate the trial tubes because I feel like they never give you enough product and they are always dried out but to my surprise this one not only had a decent amount in the small tube but I actually really like the mascara. It lengthens, builds volume and separates leaving you with a very soft and natural look. It doesn't dry or flake AT ALL and most importantly doesn't make your lashes CRUNCHY! Lol! I never purchase high end mascaras because any I tried haven't wowed me enough

  45. I was sad to hear you didn't like buxom lash as it's one of my all time favourite mascaras! I think it might have something to do with the mini size because every time I try the tarte lights camera lashes in the mini, it's the driest mascara I've ever seen - but it's totally great full size.

  48. I was surprised to read that you thought the Cover Girl Clump Crusher performed well in the waterproof area. I am currently using that mascara as well in the waterproof version, and it comes off if a rain drop hits my lashes or I'm in the bathroom and it's steamy. But other than that, it's an amazing mascara! It's really everything I thought/hoped the purple lash blast tube was going to be. If only they could get this formula super waterproof....then I'd REALLY love the mascara. Oh well, I'll just have to use an umbrella because my lashes look awesome! haha Loved the post Emily!
