Almay Intense i-Color Trio Review

Hello everyone!
Hope you're having a good Thursday! It was so much fun chatting with you this morning on Beauty Broadcast Live! (After the technical difficulties).  I mentioned one of the products I was wearing during the live show, and thought I'd give a little bit more of a description about it here, since the webcam quality isn't the greatest. This isn't really something new to the drugstore, but rather something that's been around for awhile that I haven't heard many people talk about. It's the Almay Intense i-Color Shimmer-i kit in #421 Trio for Browns. I was drawn to this trio because of the peachy/golden shade.

(Swatches without primer)
When you first swatch the shadows without primer, they really don't seem like the best shadows in the drugstore, but not the worst either. The deep brown seems to pack a punch, but the other shades are pretty sheer.

(Swatched with ELF $1 Eyeshadow Primer)
All of the shades become more intense with primer, and actually I think they look quite pretty. The lightest shade isn't simply a creamy color-- it's actually iridescent. The brown has even more depth, and the gold really pops in the peachy color. Today I used these shades with the primer on my eyes, and while they're not quite as rich as the Color Icon shadows from Wet n Wild, I think they do a pretty good job!

I used some of the iridescent shade all over the lid, which I think gives a really pretty, pearly effect. I blended the dark brown (just a little bit) in the outer corner. For as dark as that shadow is, I was impressed with how easily it blended. I used a bit of the golden/peach color to blend out the edge of the dark brown. That shade isn't super apparent in this particular look, but I have used it all over the lid before and it's really pretty that way too. Also- I took these pictures at around 3pm... so the products had been on for around 8 hours!

I thought this neutral trio worked nicely alongside my bright lip- which is Revlon Moondrops lipstick in Persian Melon. Love it! I touched up that shade (just a little bit) a few hours before taking this picture. I love the staying power and how it really stays inside my lip line! My necklace is from Cato.

I'm pretty impressed by this trio! I actually remember having an Almay eyeshadow trio a long time ago (I think I was in college?) and remember the shadows being very soft and pigmented. While the light shades can be a bit flakey/sheer, a primer or base of some sort will really help them pop. What do you think of these trios? Any favorites or duds?

Daily Nuggets...
  • The sky has been changing all day today... it went from clear to cloudy, to partly cloudy now.
  • Did you ever look at the clouds as a kid and try to make them look like different shapes? I still do that sometimes these days. There's one going by my window that looks like the state of Alaska.
  • Katie has the new Superman on her show today. Wowza!
  • Shot a new "Stuff I Love" video for the vlog channel today. Not sure when I'll upload, but I'll keep you posted on Twitter & Facebook!

  1. I have the trio for Hazel, has a burgundy I would normally touch. But I followed your basic eye tutorial and actually had coworkers comment on my eye makeup (in the good way).

  2. I had 2 of those trios back in college, when they were just the rectangle shaped pans. I loved them and they were buttery soft like you said. I have tried 3 different ones of these new ones and hate them. My mom even gave me hers because she didnt want it, and I didnt like that one either. Glad you are enjoying yours though!

  3. Oh I have a dud! It is a trio for blue eyes - it has a huge baby pink shadow (highlight), deep navy blue (crease) and silver color for the lid. Colors look gorgeous in the pan, but swatch terribly!! Almost chalk-like and not very pigmented. Boo!

This one looks beautiful on you!

  5. I have a trio that's either for hazel or green eyes. I can't really remember. I don't think I'm very fond of it though.

  8. I have the other trio for brown eyes - the purple one. Although the colours look gorgeous in the pan, I found the shadows really hard in texture and it was difficult to get much colour on my brush.

  10. I have the smoky trio for hazel - it's like a dark gunmetal for the lid, a taupe for the crease and a light silver highlight. They are terrible. Chalky and barely pigmented. I am going to give them another go with some primer and see if it helps though. Thanks for the tip!

  11. I had this exact trio. I thought it was chalky and showed little pigment. Smashbox has basically the same trio but WOW! It's a million times better as far as colour payoff and staying power. I think this Almay trio would be good for someone who likes the basic colours but also likes a 'no makeup' look during the day.

  15. I have most of the new style Almay trios.. and like them. They are wearable everyday shadows, and definitely do better with a base. They blend very well and have a delicate look, hard to overdo. Toss on a little Color Tattoo, or whatever your favorite color base is and they do a nice soft eye. Some of the color combos are a bit weird and I find I like them better arranged differently, much like the WnW trios. For example there is one in the Bold Nudes collection that is melon and navy which can look crazy applied as directed.. but use the melon on the lid and the navy as liner and it's beautiful. It's all in how you use them. True story.. around Christmas I picked up the UD Vice pallet. I did a purple smokey eye with it one day, and the next I used one of the smokey Almay trios and the CT in Painted Purple to do almost the exact same look.. I had three different people ask me what I was wearing on the day I wore the Almay. They go on sale all the time too, I don't think I paid more than $5 for any of mine.

  17. I have the same trio! I really like it. I often use the peachy shade all over my lid with nothing else for a no-eyeshadow eyeshadow look. It just gives a little pigment and perlecent glow for a totally nude eye.

  19. Anyone who wants to try these, CVS has a deal starting 6/16. They are on sale for $5.79 and you get $3 back in extra care bucks, so $2.79 each. Limit 3.
