Hidden Gem of the Drugstore: Maybelline Sunbaked Neutrals

Hey everyone!
I hope you all had a great weekend! We had family in town and had so much fun... but now the house feels pretty empty with just me and Cupcake at the moment! :) Anyway- time to talk makeup. Remember when I did my Hidden Gems of the Drugstore Haul video? Those were a bunch of products that my makeup buddy David told me about- and it was extra fun because these weren't brand new drugstore collections... but rather, things that have been around for quite some time that I just hadn't paid much attention to... but ended up being awesome. Don't get me wrong- I'm all about new drugstore stuff... but that's what everyone's talking about, right? So I get an even bigger kick out of the great stuff that I don't hear as many people raving about. The "gem" I want to share with you today is courtesy of Casmakeup on YouTube. I SO enjoy Casey's channel and in one of her videos (click here to see it) she used the Maybelline Sunbaked Neutrals 8-pan eyeshadow palette.
How many times have I walked by the Maybelline section of the drugstore and not paid any attention to this little beauty? It's definitely not a new product to Maybelline's line, but I'm glad Casey mentioned it. I believe it cost around $6 at Walmart. If you like your neutral shadows, I think it's definitely worth trying. At a glance, it reminds me of the Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette, only instead of four green-ish shades, there are only two.
I really like the variety of textures in this palette. While some are metallic, others just have a bit of shimmer, and that matte brown (top row, second from left) is awesome for a natural crease shade, or for blending out other colors. The deep brown in the lower left-hand corner is surprisingly velvety, and the metallic bronze colors are really fun for summer. The light beige in the upper left is the only one in this kit that seems a bit sheer- but in some cases that works perfectly as a highlight.

Hope you enjoyed this quick post, and let me know if you love this palette! I shot a different video today where I used some other products, otherwise I would've done a "Face of the Day" post using this kit. Thanks again to Casey for bringing this product to my attention, and as always, if there's a "Hidden Gem" you think I should try, let me know & I'll make sure to give you a shout-out! :)

Daily Nuggets...
  • After a weekend spent doing all sorts of things with my family- I feel very behind on my email/twitter/facebook correspondence! I'll try to get back on that soon!

  • It always makes me laugh when I have a typo of the word "today" and it comes out "toady"

  8. This palette is so pretty! I've never noticed it in the drugstore, but now I'm going to be on the lookout for it! Also, I LOLed at "today" vs. "toady" - I do that all the time!

And I didn't get a chance to comment on your previous post, but know that there are plenty of people who appreciate all you do. I can't stand it when other blogs I read have "sponsored posts" and I've always appreciated that you don't do those. Keep up the awesome work and keep being you; it's working pretty well! ;)

  9. I'm glad you had luck with this palette. I bought one of the other colors of the palette, Hushed Tints, a few years ago and ended up giving it away because the pigmentation was so poor. This one, however, looks great!

  12. I love this palette! It was one of the first ones I bought to start building my collection. I got it after xteeener talked about it a few years ago. She got it because it has a mini Chai Latte palette inside, which Maybelline discontinued. I haven't bought the WnW Comfort Zone palette because I've always had this one. Do you think I need both?

  14. You know what? Maybelline is slowly becoming my very favorite brand from the drugstore. I've always been a big fan of Revlon foundations and lip products, but with all the amazing Maybelline products out there I've been using lately, things are really coming into perspective.

I don't own this palette, but my sister had a neutrals quad that I loved "borrowing" from her. My mom also had one of these 8 pan palettes in her makeup collection before I bought her some things to upgrade her collection (Naked Basics!) that I used to play with all the time as a kid too.

I really need to get some Maybelline shadows of my own. This palette might be the best place to start! I'm fawning over that light green like it's nobody's business. My collection is seriously lacking in greens now that both greens in my Comfort Zone palette have shattered.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm glad you had a great weekend.

  15. This is freaky! Just this morning I was browsing in my local grocery store and that very palette jumped out at me. I had never noticed it before but I was very interested in it. I put it back because I have put myself on an eyeshadow-buying freeze but I really wanted it. So crazy that you post about that very palette today. Maybe the universe it telling me I need it! No I don't need it but I sure like the looks of it.

I love grilled cheese sandwiches filled with leftover pulled pork...yum!

  16. Thanks for this post Emily! I recommend trying out Physician's Formula's talc-free mineral wear powder foundation with SPF 16 in Natural Beige. Out of the countless powders I've tried, this is the only one that comes out perfectly smooth and not powdery.

Also, the Prestige Total Intensity liner in Deepest Black is a perfect dupe for Urban Decay's 24/7 liner in perversion, but with better staying power. <3

  18. Hi Emily! As I was reading this post about hidden gems, I immediately thought of rimmel london scandaleyes. It's an amazing mascara, but I haven't heard anyone talk about it yet. I have small lashes and they aren't too thick and this mascara lengthens, thickens, and gives A LOT of volume to them. On several occasions, I've had people ask if I'm wearing falsies. That's how great it is! I really recommend everyone to try it! :)

  19. I love Maybelline shadows! Out of all of the drugstore brands they have the best as far as I am concerned. I have a lot of their quads and thanks to you Emily I'm now also hooked on their Color Tattoo shadows!

  20. Maybelline Designer Chocolates have been my favorite neutral shadows for several years. .
I also use Maybelline Full n Soft mascara-no clumping and very buildable on the lashes. I always go back to these two products, especially the mascara. Anyway, thanks for the review.

  27. This palette looks fantastic! The golds are a bit too glittery for my liking, but the browns are gorgeous. This is by far one of the most versatile drugstore eyeshadow palettes I have seen so far.

  31. This is too funny, I literally had this palette in my hand yesterday, thinking it looked so pretty and wearable. But I thought it was quite similar to the W&W Comfort Zone palette that I already own and had never heard anyone talk about this palette! I am going straight back to CVS tonight and picking this up! You're the best Emily! Xoxo

  37. Hi Emily!!!
First of all, I really love all your reviews and tips, they have been helpful many times; the work you put into what you do really shows and it's amazing. In other subject I've had this palette for a while now and it's been great, I really love it, so glad you got to discover it.
I wanted to recommend that you check out the clear mascara from ELF, maybe you have seen it...if you haven't I got it at Meijer and have seen it in Target, it is so inexpensive and works as well ((for the eyebrows) as the Maybelline clear mascara, its got two ends of mascara which I think is awesome because sometimes the Maybelline one can get a bit nasty faster than I want it to, with two ends you get to get dirty one side and then you have this "new" one on the other side and I think it gives you the sense that you're not using a dirty product for as long as the Maybelline one.
Well, sorry for this long comment but had to share it because...who doesn't want to save a couple bucks here and there? :) Hope you have a great end of week!!! you rock!

  40. I'm just so disappointed because they used to have this in another shade that had the most gorgeous browns and taupes and I can't find it anymore. It was one of those things I tried out when I was first getting into makeup and my mom gave me a bunch of her old stuff to play with. I would love to have that, if even just for nostalgia! lol The new shades are still lovely though! :)
