Review: Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to share my review on some new drugstore products that lots of people have been buzzing about lately. These are the Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments... so basically a loose powder eyeshadow. The original Color Tattoo products were long-wearing cream shadows, which I really enjoy. So I had high hopes for these! My store didn't have a lot of colors in stock, so I went with these neutrals... Barely Brazen (champagne) and Buff & Tuff (gold).
Left to right: Barely Brazen, Buff & Tuff

The caps twist off to reveal the shaker-type insert, typical of pigments. When using these, I like to tap a little bit of the loose shadow into the lid and then dip my brush into that to apply.

These pigments seem to be rather sheer, and just kind of light and flakey. Other things in my collection labeled as "pigments" seem to be much more concentrated and give off more opaque color. Barely Brazen seems to apply more smoothly and consistently. It has a very fine shimmer to it, and I actually think it's rather pretty! Buff & Tuff seems to have less pigmentation, and contains actual bits of glitter. I expected more out of this golden shade, and even when applying it on my lid on top of a base, it wasn't outstanding- just a lot more sheer than I expected. I don't find these two pigments to be must-have products, however I do like the texture of Barely Brazen more than Buff & Tuff... that leads me to believe that this line will be kind of hit & miss all-around. If you want to see these pigments in action, I used them in my most recent Get Ready with Me video! :)

Have you tried these pigments? Are any of the shades must haves for you?
Thanks for checking out my post!

  1. I agree, these are a it sheer when worn dry. When worn wet they are so much more pigmented, but the lasting power isn't the best. I didn't enjoy these as much as I thought I would, the cream shadows are way better! :)

    1. I agree! I also find that when I apply them wet, they transfer easily to my hooded eyelid, so it looks like I have a huge stripe of awkward shimmer between my lid and browbone. Barely Brazen is really pretty, though.

    2. Are you using a primer of some kind? If you're just putting them on bare skin they're not going to stick. They work best over a cream primer or cream shadow base. I think the forest fatale is my favorite. I used Maybelline color tattoo in painted purple on her lids and then patted forest fatale pigment on top and it's magnificent...i like using these pigments over other colors rather than by themselves. The black pigment is disappointing, but with a black base (black eye pencil blended all over the lid works just fine) it's pretty nice....

  2. I bought buff and tuff and returned it because I was so disappointed. Way too much glitter and no pigmentation. I've heard some of the darker colors are better, but I think I'll stick to the cream shadows instead.

  3. Thanks for this honest review! I've been eyeing these pigments but have been holding off since loose products like this ALWAYS explode in my make-up bag. Also, I love your blog and videos :)

  7. they both look to sheer for my liking, but the lighter one would be a pretty inner corner color!

  8. I hesitated on picking these up - now I'm kind of glad that I did. They look pretty and all, but I was expecting more.

    1. I have been holding out on picking these pigments up.. and I am pretty glad that I still haven't. None of the colors wow me in the store enough for me to REALLY want to try them, and I have read and heard so many bad reviews that I really don't know if I will ever try them. :(

  11. I picked a few of these colors up last week and I feel like the pigmentation is hit or miss. Some of them need to be layered to build up. I have to say though that the olive green and black colors are gorgeous. They were both more pigmented than the other colors I bought and look really pretty.

  13. Thanks so much for the great review! I've been on the fence about purchasing a few of these...I'm not typically too crazy about loose eyeshadows, but I love the original Color Tattoos. I think I'll skip out on these :) Saw the pics of the new décor on Instagram, it looks great!!

  14. Because loose pigments can be such a pain so if they arent even pigmented i dont think theyre worth trying. Thanks for the review!

  16. I LOVE the Color Tattoo cream shadows. I have them in a couple of colors and was interested when I saw your video about the pigments. But I don't really get the whole pigment eyeshadow thing. Are the intended to be made into a solid shadow? Or just used as a loose one?

I trust your opinion Emily, and I won't be buying these! :)

  17. The cream Color Tattoos didn't work for me (made my eyelids crepey and were patchy), so I was really hoping that the Pure Pigments would be a better fit for me. I'm bummed to hear that they aren't highly pigmented. Thank you for the honest review!

  21. I actually love these, but I only got the darker colors (teal, blue, green, and pink). They go on wonderfully and stay on all day without creasing. I did put them on over an eye primer, though. They are super easy to apply with a brush. I have not tried the lighter colors.

  22. These are not very good, but I do think that Forest Fatale is absolutely gorgeous to use on top of other colors...

  23. I'm so sad that these aren't very pigmented :( I was hoping for affordable loose eyeshadows from the drugstore :(

  25. I just got the black and the pink. I agree that they're not as "pigmented" as other pigments. Strange product, but I'm determined to figure out the best way to make use of them. I definitely have to spray MAC Fix+ on my brush to get any kind of color payoff.
