Jordana Twist & Shine Moisturizing Balm Stain Review

 Hello everyone!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! :) I've been wanting to share my review on the Jordana Twist & Shine Balm Stains for a long time... the problem (if you want to call it that), is that they truly do stain the lips, so I wasn't sure how I was going to show them on my lips- one shade after the other. Would it distort the colors somehow? Well, I decided I'd give it a try today to see how it would work, and I do feel like these colors are so intensely pigmented, they really do show up true to color, even if there's a little remaining stain on the lips. FYI- while I had already purchased two of these, this collection as a whole was sent to me by Jordana, along with the 12 Hour Made to last jumbo sticks and liners, which I've already reviewed.

These are available for $2.99 each at Walgreens, and are said to be a "moisturizing balm infused with a light-weight stain." These are retractable sticks that twist up from the bottom- you don't have to sharpen them. They are a very similar format to many other jumbo sticks on the market, and they especially remind me of the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. I'm a fan of those- I love the color selection and I think the brighter/deeper shades are very long lasting. Formula-wise, I find Jordana's Twist & Shine to feel a bit more moisturizing, and therefore they show up on the lips with more shine. These build up to very rich, full color on the lips so easily, and most seem to leave behind a stain that's very true to the original color as it was first applied. I've gotten through entire days wearing these, and while the shine did fade, I still had plenty of color left on the lips. I'll clarify my thoughts on the shades in a minute- but as a whole- at about half the price of Revlon's Balm Stains, I think these are quite a steal and definitely worth a look next time you're at Walgreens!
Left to right: Nude Chic, Terra Crave, Sweet Pink, Honey Love, Candied Coral, Tropical Frenzy, Rock n Rouge, and Cranberry Crush.
The sticks are swatched here in the same order that they're shown above. The first shade, Nude Chic, actually has some fine glitter in it. It's the one shade that I don't feel is staining my lips- instead, the color wears off and just that silvery glitter is left behind. If you look very closely at Terra Crave (the second shade), there's a bit of shimmer but nothing too major. All of the other shades are just creamy colors, and I feel like every shade but Nude Chic does leave behind a stain once the shine wears away. I wanted to show these on my lips side-by-side so you could more easily compare the colors...
Top row: Nude Chic, Terra Crave, Sweet Pink, Honey Love
Bottom row: Candied Coral, Tropical Frenzy, Rock n Rouge, Cranberry Crush
  • Nude Chic: Deeper than a traditional "nude" lip, with noticeable sparkle.
  • Terra Crave: A warm, almost brown-ish spice-type shade.
  • Sweet Pink: Classic pink, a bit brighter than the baby pink I was expecting.
  • Honey Love: A true mauve, bordering on plum.
  • Candied Coral: An orange-y shade with a bit of pink.
  • Tropical Frenzy: A bright fuchsia pink- like Sweet Pink taken up a notch.
  • Rock n Rouge: True red, not quite as warm as the picture makes it appear.
  • Cranberry Crush: A bold berry that can be build up for more depth & shine.
Which shades do you like best? Personally, I find Rock n Rouge and Cranberry Crush to be the most strikingly beautiful colors of the bunch, but honestly, with the exception of Nude Chic and its glitter issue, I really think this is a wonderful collection of colors that I'll be reaching for often!

Daily Nuggets...
  • After using all of those shades back to back... I wonder how long my lips will be stained? :)
  • Fun times on Beauty Broadcast Live today! If you missed it, you can always watch the recorded version!
  • Some of you urged me to get the ELF Disney Villains Look Books at Walgreens- so I checked them out and got a couple! (not that anyone had to twist my arm! haha) I chose Cruella De Vil & Evil Queen-- I'll show them in an upcoming haul!
  • New tutorial coming tomorrow plus another review from Tyler on BBExpess! #tydayfriday

  1. Rock n Rouge is the best! It is my perfect red, the Red Revlon Balm Stain is way too orangey for my fair skin. It almost looks "natural"!

    1. I want to note it looks natural when I use it as a stain, not as a full-on red lip!

    2. What is the difference between stain and full on red lip?

  7. I have honey love and the strange thing is that the stain on my lips is a different color than when I first put it on??? I didn't notice until the end of the day.

    1. I agree! I love the color when I first put Honey Love on, but as it wears off it leaves this bright pink color behind.

  9. I have Candied Coral and Cranberry Crush, and I love them both! I was actually really surprised by how much I liked Cranberry Crush because I don't usually go for such deep colors, but it's somehow really pretty and wearable. Thanks for showing us swatches of every shade! I'll definitely be picking up a few more of these soon. :)

  10. I just bought Terra Crave today! Looks great (kind of reddish) on my lips but when it wears off, the stain is fushia! Two looks in one I guess...LOL

    1. Terra Crave looks like a warm reddish medium colored color on my lips not too dark or too brown, and I have a yellow warm undertone to my light skin. I look horrible in any blueish cool pink, red or purple type colors. The candied coral looks like a neutral shade on me not a warm yellow pink that I look best in.It looks pretty on but it does turn to a more bright deeper pink shade after it's been for a while.

    2. Also Terra Crave looks pretty much the same nice color on Emily in the picture as it does on me.

  21. I have 3 of these. Tropical frenzy is ny fav. I want them all except for the nude one.
    Cant wait for the haul!

  22. I have four of these and I love Terra Crave and Rock n Rouge. However, I feel like both Sweet Pink and Candied Coral do really weird things on my lips. They'll appear one color when I first apply them but as the balm wears off and the stain effect emerges it gets really, really neon bright and I don't think they look good on me. I've been wondering if anyone else had experienced this.

    1. Yes this happens to me. I only have Terra Crave and the stain ends up a bright fuschia pink. Weird...

    2. I have all but the rockin rouge and they all change color on me, I thought it was just me since all the reviews I've read rave about them. Nice to see I'm not alone :-/ mude chic is annoying with the glitter that travels, but I do love honey love the perfect nude for my dark olive skin!

    3. I've worn the Terra Crave since this morning and I just decided I do not like it. The stain looks awful on my lips. The stain today is the color of really chapped lips (not a good look) LOL

    4. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the stain issues! I felt the same way, everyone was raving and my lips felt defective!

  27. I actually JUST picked up two of them today! I agree, the Nude Chic is a beautiful nude color and I was initially soo excited to try it, since I absolutely hated the Revlon's "Precious" and returned it - it just left my lips with an off-color pink stain that was not pretty at all. But I LOVE the Jordana one to the point of being ok dealing with the sparkles... I wish they would re-formulate it and make it just creamy. And I love Cranberry crush as well, especially after it is topped with the new Fall 2013 Maybelline colorstay lipgloss in Raspberry Ablaze. Gorgeous..

  28. I love all those colors!! I really like honey love, its not too deep of a shade yet its a calm looking color! I actually have bought the sweet pink color! Now i think I'm gonna go and buy some more!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have Nude Chic and Honey Love in these and I really like them a lot! I may try another color or two but usually some colours are sold out.

  30. I've got to make a trip to Walgreens! My picks are the Honey Love and Cranberry Crush.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Rock N Rouge and Tropical Frenzy caught my eye immediately. I am a devotee of red so this shade is just what the doctor ordered!! Beautiful, rich, and shiny.
And Tropical Frenzy is just the perfect shade of fuchsia for me, bright pink...so gorgeous.
I'll need to stop by Walgreen's and get some lipstains...this comes at a perfect time too because I've been wanting to try the Revlon's Just Bitten stains but havent because of the price, now with Jordana I can definitely afford to buy more. :)
    Thanks foe the review, Emily!!

  32. I have them all except Nude Chic & Terra Crave. Terra Crave looked too dark for my skin tone & I generally stay away from "tan" lips and I was contemplating going back for Nude Chic. Thanks to your post I won't be going back for Nude Chic because of the glitter! Thanks again!

Also for people who struggle finding Jordana at Walgreens, it took me awhile to find the display as well, it's usually located next to the register they have in the makeup section next to sinful colors nail polish.

  33. These are amazing! I have one shade in the Revlon version (Romantic - amazing orange red) but wanted to find some more work-appropriate shades. Plus these are so much cheaper, and more moisturizing! Unfortunately the Walgreens I went to didn't have Sweet Pink or Honey Love, but I got Nude Chic to see what these were all about! Definitely going to the other Walgreens in my area to hunt the others down!

I tried a Clinique Chubby Stick I got with a bonus last week and it's simply terrible! It was the Watermelon shade and the color was nice, but it smelled like old lady purfume and didn't apply smoothly at all. You'd think the $3 version would be plastic and waxy, and the $15 version would be silky and smell nice.

  37. I bought Cranberry Crush based on your youtube video. I absolutely love it especially for $3. It's a shame in a way because you'd never even notice them. A lot of them also are not the color that the tube appears. Thanks for the swatching/photos. gorgeous and really high quality product. I wear this a ton.

  39. Im so glad you reviewed these because they are so affordable. I love the just bitten ones but I can't afford to buy them all so I bought my 2 favorite shades and then the remaining shades I wanted I purchased in the jordana line. So moisturising and with build-able coverage. great product!

  41. These lip stains are amazing! Definitely can compare to higher end brands, if not actually better. LOVE them! They are more like very smooth creamy lipstick, not to mention that they are so easy to use as well. No mess that comes with lipstick. I'm definitely hooked, the only thing that I use.
