LORAC Pro & Unzipped: Shade Comparisons

Hi everyone!
Hope you're having a wonderful week so far. This blog comes as the result of a request by lovely viewer and friend- Linda Webb! She posted this comment on my Warm & Cozy Eye Tutorial video where I used the LORAC Unzipped palette...

After reading Linda's comment, I was eager to compare the two palettes and see how many shades actually overlapped. I was surprised I hadn't done this sooner! I feel like the Pro palette has become so popular, and many people who have that one might be wondering whether or not Unzipped is worth it. So let's get started. Here are the two palettes (and keep in mind- you can click any of these pictures to enlarge them).
Top: LORAC Pro Palette
Bottom: LORAC Unzipped Palette
Pro swatches are on top, Unzipped swatches are on the bottom. At a glance, you might notice some similarities. I decided to do some side-by-side swatches of any shades that seemed remotely comparable. I'm not claiming to have found any exact dupes, but wanted you to see for yourselves how close (or not so close) some of these shades are.
Pro: Mauve - Unzipped: Unconditional
These shades are both matte, and they look almost identical when you see them in the palettes. However in the swatches, I notice Mauve to have a more purple tone and Unconditional is more pink.
Pro: Lt. Bronze - Unzipped: Unreal
These shadows have the same shimmery, metallic finish. They're really quite close in tone as well! But I can tell that Light Bronze has more of a golden tone, and Unreal has more pink.
Pro: Taupe - Unzipped: Unspoken
Both are mid-toned matte browns... not too light, not too dark. This was another situation where the shades look identical in the palettes, but side-by-side, it's pretty clear that Unspoken has more warmth, where taupe is a cooler-toned brown.
Pro: Cream - Unzipped: Undercover
Here's a couple of shades that actually don't have the same finish-- I feel like Undercover is more of a satin (doesn't really show in this pic), and cream is totally matte, however the color of these shades is very much the same.
Pro: Gold - Unzipped: Undiscovered
These golds both capture the metallic finish- but the one in the Pro palette is more of a classic gold, and Undiscovered is a softer, less brassy shade... it's like gold mixed with a champagne color.

There you go! Hopefully this satisfied your curiosity if you were wondering whether these palettes overlapped. I don't feel like there are any truly exact dupes from one palette to the next, but there are some definite similarities. For some of you, maybe these swatches are so close that you don't feel having both palettes is necessary-- for others, you might find these swatches different enough to put you over the edge to buy another. Beyond the pairs that I've swatched, these palettes do have some distinct differences overall. The Pro palette has a wider variety of colors and tones (warm & cool), but the Unzipped palette has more mid-tone bronzy/brown and burgundy colors. Quality-wise, I feel like the two palettes are very consistent... both matte and shimmery shades are smooth, pigmented, and a little goes a long way in terms of application. Thanks for checking out this post, and thanks to Linda for requesting it! :)

  3. Have you seen the preview pics for the Naked 3 palette? They're pink based neutrals. Seeing it instantly made me think of you!

  5. Thank you for the comparison! I just recently finally purchased the Pro palette and I am already in LOVE with it! I was curious about the other though, so this was very helpful :)

  7. My bf surprised me with both of these palettes for my birthday and it never crossed my mind that the 2 palettes could be similar. I agree, there are distinct differences. Love them both. Man, when my bf surprised me w/ the Unzipped palette, I thought, OMGOSH now I can try the Warm and Cozy look that Emily did! And I did! So pretty!

  8. Thank you, Emily. Great post. I have always found the Unzipped palette to be alluring, but now after the swatch comparison to the Pro I will continue to use my Pro. The unzipped is still lovely, but not a big enough difference to persuade me to purchase. Have a great day!

  11. Thank you for the comparison. I'm probably in the minority in that I've actually been disappointed in my lorac pro palette and was wondering if I may like unzipped better. This is helpful to see.

  12. I have both palettes and I love them equally, although for different reasons. The Pro is a great travel companion but the Unzipped really makes my brown eyes pop, no matter how I used it!

  13. I want them both now - oh no! I'm on a no buy November - I must hold on! These look amazing though!

  14. Thanks for the comparison. I never thought these two palettes were alike. I have them both and love them both. However, I didn't realize some of the shades were similar but still distinct until now. Like some of the others commented, I'd like to see how the Naked 3 compares to the Unzipped with all the pinky shades.

  15. I also have both and also never thought of them as overlapping, probably because, at a glance, there's a different vibe. I love them both... they are my two favorite palettes. I probably won't buy another Naked as there is too much shimmer for me. I gave my Naked 1 to my daughter and the only shadow I missed was Darkhorse, so I bought the single when it came out.

  16. This makes me want to get the Lorac Unzipped palette even more (I'm metaphorically speaking sitting on my credit card to avoid hunting it down on Ebay as not available in England)!

  18. The LORAC Pro Palette is being sold for $39 (cheaper than usual) with a primer and eyeliner at Ulta right now for the holidays!! Shhh don't tell anyone ;) Thanks for sharing your comparison.

  19. I just bought the Pro Palette and I am already in love! It was a tough deciscion between the unzipped and pro but the pro had more shades that I would wear so thats the one I went for! I would love to see you compare all the different beauty blenders/ dupes out there I really want to try it but would much rather find a cheaper alternative!

  20. Absolutely LOVE this post. You seem to have read my mind -- or maybe Linda did. :) Thank you. I own the Pro and think I'll be content with that one. But maybe I'll gift Unzipped to my sister . . . . They are just so beautiful!

  21. Emily, I love your youtube channel. I've been watching it for years. You're such an inspiration to me. Will you please check my blog and maybe give me some tips on how to improve it?? http://makeupdiaryofanaddict.blogspot.be/

  22. Combos! I only allow myself to eat those when stuck in a car traveling long distances, they are so addictive! (Which is basically around Thanksgiving to see my family, Yay!, it's almost Combo time!)

  23. I prefer the Unzipped palette's shadows because they're not as loosely packed. To me the Lorac Pro has a ton of fallout.

  25. Hi Emily! GREAT blog post! THANK YOU! Now I am thinking about purchasing Unzipped. I'm wondering though how Stilla's In The Light compares to the Unzipped? They seem pretty similar. Do you think it would be worth it to own both?

  26. Would love for you to pick up the 12 dollar Lorac pallets at ultra and review them soon, so I know whether I want them for my birthday :)

  27. Emily,
I love all your videos as much as I love this 2 palletes. I find myself reach these two more than my both naked palletes shhhh......... I just watched your best eyeshadow palette video, thanks for in depth details and your makeup look awesome and flawless. I do have question on the palettes that you not really reach for what do you do with them? I pretty much went out and got most of tarte holiday palletes after watch your videos but for some reason I feel overwhelmed by tons of eyeshadows..
What do you do with them? Do you still keep it or use it? I feel bad for neglecting them....

  28. very cool Thank you! would love to see more of these side by side comparisons with in the same brand and comparing brand palettes .

  29. great post this was such a good idea to compare them because I know that my sister was trying to decide out of these two pallets which one to get. After a long trip to Ulta she decided on the unzipped one because she is a beginner and didn't think that she would use some of the colors in the pro pallet that weren't a brown neutral shade.

  31. This was so great! Although I admit I'm still not sure if I need the Unzipped palette! I already have the Pro palette. . . But I love the warm tones and color family of the Unzipped palette. Maybe I will put it on my list to Santa & see what happens!

  32. I can't figure out how to use the color Deep Purple in the Lorac Pro. It's so beautiful in the pan, but it just ends up looking almost black when I put it on my eyes :/

  33. Thanks so much for the comparison Emily! I'll probably pick up the Lorac Pro Palette before picking up the Unzipped Palette!

  34. Great post. I already have the Lorac Pro so I don't feel like I need the Unzipped (even though it has some gorgeous shades).

  35. I had been looking for a post like that for a couple of months and was so pleased to find it at last, especially on my favourite you tubers blog. Thanks so muh. I'm in Australia and to get the pro palette from a site that ships to australia will cost $70 + shipping so I absolutely needed to know that it was the right one and I wasn't sure if I'd prefer the unzipped or not. A couple of the colours in the unzipped I loooove but I think in the end the pro palette will be more versatile given I'll have to spend so much money on it. Cheers.

  36. Thank you for another helpful post! I'd love to see a post or vlog comparing the 3 Naked pallettes and which to have if someone is only going to have one. Thanks again and stay warm :)

  37. I think the Unzipped palette I got is a dud >.< The colors are beautiful in the pan, but I cannot get pigmentation on my eyelids, primer or no! :/
