Eye of the Day: Olive Shimmer

 Hi everyone!
First off-- I apologize for the inconsistent blogging! We are in the process of selling our house and buying a new one... and it's such an exciting, stressful, busy process. I'll share more details when things get officially sewn up, but it's been keeping me very busy. Mom continues to tell me- "don't overdo it!" So the blogs may be more sporadic right now, but I'll get back into my groove once things slow down. Thanks for understanding! :) For now I just wanted to share the details on the look I was wearing yesterday. I was experimenting with the BH Cosmetics Special Occasion palette for the first time. I told my pal Kristin yesterday- I think I'm going through a green phase! :)
This is an eyeshadow AND blush palette- but here's just the eyeshadow part and the specific shades I used...
  1. After putting on a primer, I applied the shimmery white around my inner corner.
  2. I used the shimmery green all over my lid, and smudged it on my lower lashline.
  3. Using a small brush, I applied matte black in my outer corner, and the outer part of my lower lashline.
  4. I used the matte warm brown as a blending shade just above my crease.
  5. The matte cream is my highlight under the brows.
Swatches of shades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5
As for other products, I used the liquid pen side of my NYX Two Timer eyeliner on my upper lashline (review here), and I used my Em Cosmetics Waterliner in Black Night on my inner rim. I'm also trying out the new L'oreal Miss Magna mascara, so I have that on my upper and lower lashes.
For blush I'm wearing Down Boy from The Balm, and on my lips is Maybelline Color Whisper in Coral Ambition, with a little bit of NYX Lip Pencil in Mahogany. Hope you enjoy this look! :) I was pretty pleased with the pigmentation of these BH shadows on my eyes, and I'm excited to test out some more color combinations in the future.

Daily Nuggets...
  • Just a little heads up for any other video-makers... memory cards are more fragile than you may think. I snapped the tip off of one yesterday as I was removing it from my camera, and that was enough to keep my computer from being able to read it. Fortunately Tyler's laptop could-- but that meant using an unfamiliar version of imovie for my last couple of Express videos. Just be gentle with those little things! :)
  • Contacts are a pain today... I think it's glasses time.
  • Seems like all the big song & dance shows are wrapping up! Any guesses about who will win American Idol tonight? They're both so talented, but I'm thinking Caleb might take it.
  • Today I'm 23 weeks pregnant! Baby is the size of a grapefruit!! I'll be working on our next vlog at some point soon!

BH Cosmetics Haul

Hello friends!
This post is all about BH Cosmetics-- a brand that I've been getting lots of questions about! I really haven't tried much from BH Cosmetics over the years (just one palette, I believe!) because I've always thought their products seemed very similar to Coastal Scents, which is a brand that I have tried a lot of things from. But more recently, it seems like each of these brands are coming out with more unique products. Not too long ago, I saw BH Cosmetics being featured on Hautelook (it's not there anymore), and that prompted me to dive in and try some things. This brand is very affordable as-is, but the added discount made it all very tempting! And by the way- it looks like this stuff is all in stock on the BH website if anyone is interested. So far, I've only really tried the blushes enough to be able to review them (click here to watch the video), so this is pretty much just a haul to show you what I got! (Click any of the pictures to enlarge them).
6 Color Concealer & Corrector Palette in Light
This little palette contains 3 skin-tone concealers as well as 3 color-correcting shades. I noticed that middle and deepest shades on the top row are actually kind of peach-toned, making them pretty good for correcting under-eye darkness. The lightest skin-tone shade is also nice for highlighting. I haven't played with all of the corrector colors much yet. I've noticed that while these concealers feel very creamy as your swirl your finger in them, they set to more of a dry feel/finish on the skin. This may be able to be remedied with a more moisturizing eye cream (if you're using them in that area)- but I'll keep you posted on how it goes as I work with the product more. I plan to review it! :)
Special Occasion Eyeshadow & Blush Palette
I haven't worn this palette yet (only swatched so far), but I'm very excited about it! It comes with 30 shadows and 9 blushes. The shadows vary in finish-- some are matte, some are shimmery, and some have a really metallic look. I like the blend of earthy neutrals as well as jewel tones. I think this is going to be a fun palette to play with! The pigmentation seems pretty good throughout, and will probably only improve when these are applied on the lids on top of some sort of primer or base. I also like the variety of blush colors.

Here are some swatches! The top left pic is the first 3 rows, and the bottom left pic is the bottom 2 rows. All of the blushes are on the right. Have you tried this palette yet? If so, what do you think about it?
Lilac Blush Duo
As mentioned above, I've reviewed these blush duos in this video! So check that out for more information. Each duo consists of a large compact with two shades. Lilac is a light pink blush and a pearly highlight. The first swatch is the blush, the second is the highlight, and the third is a mix of the two. Overall, this is kind of a weak blush, in my opinion. It's not that it looks bad on the skin, but the colors are pretty sheer.
Iris Blush Duo
The Iris Blush duo has a deep matte rose and a shimmery coral. The third swatch is the two of those shades combined. Judging by the look of the rose in the pan, I would've expected it to be a bit more intense, but for lighter/medium skintones, I think it provides a really nice level of color. This blush would be my pick of the two, but probably not something that I find special enough to repurchase. Have you tried any of these blush duos? Which ones are your favorites?

  • Just ate some leftover wings from last night! Tyler's sister Rachel (half of "the twins") is staying with us for a few days so we went to Buffalo Wild Wings, of course.
  • We also made these no-bake cookies last night... I don't think I'd had them since high school. So good!
  • Just felt the baby make some moves in my tummy! I think she wanted to say hi!
  • I really want to go swimming. I don't care if there's a big baby bump out there for all to see!
  • This week's #tydayfriday video on Beauty Broadcast Express will be slightly different... Bub is going to review a food item. Specifically: candy. I hope that's ok with everyone. Stay tuned!

It Happened Again!

Hi everyone!
Hope you're having a great week! This morning while I was putting my makeup on, I experienced a product malfunction... for the second time! It involves the It Cosmetics Hello Lashes mascara. I thought I'd share and see if this has been an issue for any of you as well. First off- a little backstory...
This mascara has a rubber bristle brush, and at the tip, there is a distinct "ball" that is supposed to help you get added lift and separation. To quote the information on Ulta's site--
"...the innovative Magic Wand Lash Ball Detailer tip is designed to reach every last inner and outer corner lash."
The first time I used this mascara (it was probably a couple of years ago), I never got to experience the greatness of that little ball because it actually broke off of the wand as I pulled it out of the tube. I suspect that the resistance from the little stopper that clears off some of the mascara just snapped the tip right off.

More recently, I decided to give this mascara another shot in my It Cosmetics 1-Brand Tutorial. I got a new tube, and had been using it for a week or so by the time I showed it in action in this video. The "Magic Wand Lash Ball Detailer tip" was still in tact. Overall, I liked that the mascara had the special tip-- it does a good job, assuming you clear off any excess mascara that likes to linger on the ball. This was an o.k. mascara for me, but doesn't quite give me as much length, separation, and thickness as I would like. It also wasn't great about holding a curl (my lashes are also rather curl-resistant.) I like BIG lashes and tend to expect a lot out of mascaras. Anyway, since that tutorial, I've used the mascara a few more times and then this morning- look what happened!
YEP! That magical ball snapped off again! Right as I pulled the wand out of the tube. What the heck? I figured the first time was just a fluke, but now I'm 2 for 2 on broken wands! Has this happened to anyone else? I felt the need to write this follow-up post since I had just recently shown this mascara in a video. Needless to say, I would not recommend this mascara. It's not that it can't still be used without the ball, but let's face it-- it's not supposed to happen. I love a LOT of stuff from It Cosmetics and tend to hold that brand to a pretty high standard... so it was very disappointing to experience this issue both times that I've had this mascara. Thanks for reading, and let me know whether or not you've had success with this product!
