Emily Awards 2015: FINALE + A little chat!

Can you believe it?! Another season of the Emily Awards has come and gone! Huge thanks to everyone who's been watching the videos, reading the blogs, and sharing their kind feedback with me. These videos are incredibly time consuming, but of course, it's incredibly fun to discuss my favorite things! If you already watched the finale video, you noticed that it does not follow the "top 10" format. There are just so many special, specific awards that I do in the finale, along with a really varied selection of products from hair to skincare to body care... it just didn't make sense to put them into a ranking. Anyway... everything I mentioned in the video is listed below! The "buy" links will take you to wherever the product is being sold online, and "more info" links will take you to any other review videos or posts on that particular item.

* Denotes the number of years a product has won. Products without and asterisk are first-time winners. Most product links are affiliate links. Best products for skincare, hair, and body are listed in no particular order.

Again, thanks so much for your support of the Emily Awards over the years! Can we chat for a second? I really try to improve the awards with each passing year. The Top 10 format was brand new this year, and the reason for this was two-fold... the awards had grown so much, I wanted to offer something more concise and definitive for my viewers so true "top" favorites could be easily seen. I just wanted to make the overall viewing experience more fun, exciting, and less overwhelming.

Also- the time it takes to create and edit a video where I'm discussing anywhere from 25 to 35 products per video (times four), plus the special production elements that I add to the Emily Awards for intros, product videos, demos, blogging, etc... it was getting to be a very overwhelming task for one person (yes, I have considered hiring an intern during Emily Awards season... ha!) Anyway, after last year, I felt borderline burned-out... and that's scary to me. I NEVER want to feel exasperated, overwhelmed and like something Beauty Broadcast-related is a chore. I'm proud that after so many years at this YouTube thing, it still genuinely feels like fun, and I think that's something that has helped my channel succeed. But last year being my first year with a new baby... I just had this feeling that something needed to change with the Emily Awards and I was almost relieved to see a viewer suggestion that mentioned paring things down a bit. It was time for something new!

Something I've learned is that the Top 10 format takes more thought than the way I was doing it before! However... it takes less time in front of a camera and less editing. For my current lifestyle keeping track of a busy toddler... that works much better for me! And I just loved being able to actually count down to an ultimate favorite in each one of my videos. And for the Emily Awards "geeks" out there... I enjoyed offering the full category-by-category favorites here on the blog to accompany each video. But I want to keep improving! What things do you want to see next year? Anything more? or less? Any new categories?

Some suggestions I've seen so far include: having separate categories in the face awards for corrector and concealer, including the number of years a product has won in the Top 10 videos, having longer written explanations for products in the blog posts. Anything else? Please share in the comments section here or send me a tweet! I'll add your suggestion to my list and take them into consideration for next year's Emily Awards. Another thing that I've been thinking about is starting the awards earlier... perhaps in December, but BEFORE the holidays? That way it can feel more like a year-end wrap up, plus it might be useful for holiday shoppers. Just a thought!

Thanks for reading my rambles here on the blog (I know those who come here are the heart of #beautybroadcastnation!) And I've been asked if there will be a fails video... the answer is yes- I'm working on it! :) Have a great day, everyone!! ♥

  2. I really like the idea of having the awards before Christmas. I actually did purchase some of the holiday gift sets you recommended so that works too. Anything to help come up with great gift ideas for ladies is always a plus! Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration.

  3. Hi Emily! I'm a longtime lurker, but I found you I think via the Emily Awards 2014 and have been hooked ever since! I love your thoughtful reviews, and I love that you never get swept away by the hype; your reviews are always grounded and well-informed.

All that said, I think the top 10 format this year was great, and I love the idea of doing these reviews before the holidays, especially if it makes your life easier. I get a ton of great info from your monthly favorites, so don't feel like you need to reinvent the wheel at the end of the year :)

If you find that you have perennial favorites, perhaps consider doing a video of products I keep buying (I think you already did something like this but can't find it) or maybe do something like Lisa Eldridge did when she talked about all-time favorite products that she always keeps in her kit. It meant a lot to hear what products she keeps repurchasing year after year. So maybe something like that could take some of the pressure off or spread out the recommendations throughout the year.

    1. Great idea Kathryn! I also loved watching Lisa Eldridge's video of the items she has repurchased for the last twenty years. That proves that she really loves them. I would also really like to see Emily's recommendations for products she has purchased time and time and time again.

    2. That's a great idea! I think she did a video like this a few months back, called "Drugstore Holy Grail Makeup Repurchases."

    3. thanks, Kathryn! It would be fun to do something looking at the things that have won the MOST Emily Awards over the years- product all stars or something! Thank you!

  4. I really like the top 10 format! I saw another you tuber (Jen Luv's Reviews) do top 10 and she'll start with products she didn't like that month and then count up to her favorite products of the month. I think that's pretty cool, I like having a top 10 video all in all. I'd kind of also like to know top 10 products of the year overall... but that might be kind of obvious like the MVP awards.

  5. I wonder about a top five for high end and top five for drugstore in each category?

Also maybe keeping things to products released or that u discovered in 2016? In your records u could not if anything has knocked out your holy grail items. That might just keep things a little more current I totally understand mentioning the Rimmel foundation since you actually like it but I sorta would like to see how you'd rank specifics new products.

In any case I think trying to switch things up and try different things especially to match new demands on ur time makes a lot of sense!

  6. I definitely would prefer to see them in December prior to the holidays. That way it can also serve as a kind of ultimate gift guide---two birds, one stone!

I also think it might be better if you stopped doing repeats of awards, and limited the winners to stuff you tried in the calendar year before, and then maybe did a separate "all-time" favs video. I enjoy seeing new stuff when we're talking about annual awards, but I like to see all-time favourites too. This may also split up the work and make it easier on your end.

Regardless of what changes you might decide to make, I have enjoyed your channel almost since the beginning (even though I never usually comment), and I wish you even more success in the future! :)

  8. I like the idea of having it before the holidays! A couple of people have commented that they would like favourites of only this year... but personally, seeing how many times something has won is nice because it shows me how important that product really is! And not just something that you have to put out but don't necessarily love because it's the nicest new thing around.

  10. Hi Emily! Just want to reiterate my former comment- I think the top ten format is an improvement! I literally never skip a video, so seeing your top ten was really interesting for me, since I'm already familiar with what you gave positive reviews to throughout the year. 11. Long time viewer/reader here but first time commenting. I disagree with some of the recommendations to limit the awards to only new items in the past year. When I am considering purchasing a product I like having your opinion on what you consider to be the best overall, that is one of the reasons why I love the Emily Awards. I like trying and buying the new stuff as much as any other beauty junkie but I look to specific product reviews for that feedback. I also agree with one of the comments above that including multi-year winners tells me that it truly is a great product and can stand the test of time. I've also really enjoyed the new format of having a Top 10 along with the more detailed blog post. Thank you Emily, I appreciate all the work you put into videos!

    1. Hey Jessica - thank you! I agree about continuing to take the older favorites into account- that's kind of what the Emily Awards is all about & what sets it apart from other "best of..." type videos. I think those kinds of comparisons are really important- otherwise it's very easy to get swept up in the exciting NEW NEW NEW product world. And there's all the other videos that I do year-round that mention the new things, like my monthly Best in Beauty videos. thanks for watching! :D

  12. Emily, I really enjoyed the Top 10 video format this year. I liked that you just got right down to your top products, because, like you said, there are just so many categories. I want to know what stood out to you the most. But I still appreciate that you listed out everything on your blog for reference. I prefer the Emily Awards in January. I usually have gift cards from Christmas and my birthday is in February, so I wait to watch the awards before I purchase. I am a long-time subscriber (apt. days!) and you are the best at what you do.

  13. i know that I never knew you to begin with but from what I see your personality seems a little different. You only comment to things you agree with? Spoken comments in videos indicate your frustration with people critiquing you. Maybe it's because your channel has changed. And it's all about priority and how you spend your time. I know that I am so envious you get to stay home and be with belle plus pursue your passion. I am a mom and work outside the work full time and don't have the luxury to cut back work. Just something to be aware of I think when you're saying you have a toddler and don't have time. I don't think you have to explain yourself at all but when you bring up not having time, I don't get it. If your channel were a greater priority someone could watch belle or she could be in childcare even part time if u wanted to. But ur priority isn't the channel and so say that. Reading how you respond people on Twitter as well just has me questioning if my perception of you has really been off. Seems less sweet and more defensive. Why ask for feedback if you only respond with reasons why you're going to continue doing it ur way? And it's ur channel so of course it's ur preference but why ask and then shoot down ideas. I think that your reviews are trustworthy and amazing. But keeping up with reviewing new products and tutorials aren't what they were before. You have a loyal viewership and maybe even gained following through snapchat and new moms. But some people aren't going to be into the mom stuff but so what? I guess what I'm trying to say is it seems that you've been insecure and it's been manifesting in frustration with fans and I just want to say that your channel is differnt but that's maybe just your new reality and you contribute to YouTube in a unique way but your channel is different than others who devote full time effort. I guess I truly appreciate when it seems you are gracious toward fans. You perform a service absolutely and are making six figures or more from YouTube and you have doctors and nurses and teachers (and more-just know these for a fact) watching that don't make that and give you their time. I will probably be attacked like other have been when they leave anything but rave comments but I hope that you'll take the meaning here as a curiosity and sadness about what's changed. I'm not trying to bash you and I hope things go well with your channel

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Ashley! Thanks for your feedback! I'm not quite sure where to begin in responding- it seems you're pretty frustrated with me and my channel and I'm not sure if that's an issue I can mend or not. Very thankful for your viewership, first off! As a fellow mom, I'm sure you agree that in life, family is the first priority. I wouldn't have even thought I had to announce that, but I'm happy to do so! :) The beauty of YouTube is that I have the ability to adjust the way I do things with my channel to better fit my life. In changing the Emily Awards, I felt like I was making a decision to improve the content while improving the overall experience for myself as well. I love doing videos, and feel like with time and experience, I've steadily improved my channel. Totally fine if you don't share that view- as these things are subjective! :) I genuinely try my best with the things I do, and am fully aware that I still won't be everyone's cup of tea. I respond to a great deal of comments of all types across social media and I guess my thought is this- just like in everyday life... I don't seek to be right, I seek to be understood. I never want anyone to feel I've "attacked" them in response to their comments- that would be awful and I'm sorry if you've noticed this somewhere. And I'm just sorry all-around for being the source of your apparent frustration. I truly want people to feel uplifted as a result of my content, not sad or upset. Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts with me and I will continue striving to make my channel the best experience it can be for my viewers!

The changes you made this year were great. I am glad we still had the best high end/drugstore from each category here besides the top 10 videos. 16. Emily I am really liking the new format of the Emily awards this year. I do taking your category save it as a reference whenever I do my shopping and with the top 10 in each category this year, it makes it much easier for me. S for having Emily awards to start earlier before the holidays, I am just where it is it will be too overwhelming for you as you will be traveling for visiting during that period. I'm just thinking instead of the year end wrap up, we could actually have a quarter three top 10 favorites makeup items for gifting. This way it will be a even greater challenge will you to narrow down really outstanding makeup items that we could buy for our loved ones and they could continue buying them after finishing the product not having to worry about these items being limited edition or holiday items. Because I do recall that you often do a holiday palettes reviews or recommendations during the holiday season with all the major brands released the holidays sets.

  18. I think of all beauty-related youtubers I watch, you put the most thought and effort into every video. Many others just "sit down to film a video", or I legit saw a video named "review" that was this person using the item for the first time and talking about how she liked it by the end of the day. It's not that videos like I mentioned aren't fun to watch, but I truly trust your recommendations and know you've been thorough and backup everything you put out there. You are an amazing beauty guru!

As far as timing of Emily Awards - I feel like there is already so much going on before Christmas with reviews of holiday sets and gift guides and such, plus doing all the family-related things during December, that you'd have even less time to work on the awards. But that's just a thought!

I really liked the Top 10 format this year, and I liked the 4 separate category videos as well as a fail (which I read above that you still plan to do). Maybe add in nail stuff or even fashion-related things, if they apply?

Thanks so much for all you do! Your videos are the best.

  27. Hi, Emily! I am a loyal viewer since your apartment days and I am a new mom myself. I may understand where you're coming from in regards to being overwhelmed and all. From all I'm reading here and observing from your videos, I feel that you know in your heart what you know what to do and what not to do and maybe you should follow it for the sake of keeping your sanity. This is YOUR channel. As much as I personally love how you go above and beyond every beauty guru out there and keeping it very honest & consistent for us, maybe (and I mean this in a very sincere way) you should keep it honest with yourself! If there is a need to have an intern, go for it! If you feel that your information needs to be treated with someone you truly trust and gets how you work, maybe it'll be fun to share this task with your mom or Pup (and maybe have them chime in their favorites, as well!). I personally do enjoy when you include them in your videos. If you feel the need to do the Emily Awards in December, maybe it'll be a good thing. Take risks, Emily, and do what your heart tells you to do. Not many of your viewers may agree, but a happy and genuine Emily is probably the best makeup and skincare of them all. Most of us will understand. If not, we will all eventually understand.

P.S.: I do love the Top 10 format! Also, I do love how you keep it genuine by also incorporating your tried and true favorites. Maybe a video idea, but maybe you can feature your discontinued favorite products and shades which do not have a dupe and tell the manufacturers to bring it back.

  28. I'm a longtime viewer/reader, and I really liked the "top 10" format! I think it was very concise and fun to watch. I understand how listing 2 items in every category can make for a very lengthy video, and so I think the top 10 format is more concise, while keeping the longer list on your blog for those who are interested. I think one thing to consider as well might be also adding in a winner in each category of top 10 video for "Best new face/eye/lip product introduced in the past year." With so many new products coming out each year, this might be a nice way to incorporate something totally new, say for example if all the other winners in that category are repeat items or items that aren't necessarily brand new products. Overall I really liked the top 10 format, and while I do appreciate having the whole "list" of winners, I think it's just as easily accessible here for those who want to refer to it. I also want to say how much I appreciate that you include drugstore as well as higher-end products, and you even include the least expensive drugstore such as NYC or Wet n Wild, when those brands are ignored by many YTers. I think it is nice to give folks in every price bracket some different options & recommendations. Bottom line - this is *your* channel, and I don't think any of us want you to feel overwhelmed or unhappy or stressed out over your content.

Congratulations for another successful Emily Awards. Trust me when I say, A LOT of my stash have been some of your recommendations.
I liked the Top 10 format but I didn't love it. I missed the H/E & DS format. I found myself having to come back here everytime to look at the list of H/E & DS which made me wonder whether the Top 10 format was a reason to increase viewership of your blog. No judging here, just an opinion.

As for what I wish for you to include in your channel, maybe more Dupe videos ? I noticed that those type of videos have been very successful in the past on your channel.

I also agree with some of the commenters in adding certain categories to the Emily awards, best look you came up with, best cost-effective brand, best product you learned to love again while shopping your stash ?

    Anyway, sending lots of love,

    Leena

  33. At first, I was disappointed about the change in format because I am definitely someone who is reluctant to enjoy change. However, once I got through the first video, I found that I actually really liked the new format because it was much more streamlined and easy to watch. I love that you kept the coordinating blog posts in the old format-- it made me not miss it on the videos so much.
Thanks for all of the awesome videos; you are one of the first beauty bloggers I ever watched on YouTube, and you just keep getting better!

  34. Hi Emily! Thank you SO much for all your hard work (even it does not look like from the outside :) ) Always enjoy watching your videos! But honestly I do prefer the old "format" of "Emily award" when you tell and show (!) high and drug store make up! Yes, I know you have it on your web! But it is kind of annoying to open/wait many windows, see only pics but not really "product in action"... Don't hate me! :) Again, thank you so much for all your videos!

  40. I've heard rumors about myself that are true - and nobody likes that. But there's actually something very liberating when you hear a false rumor because you realize there's nothing you can do.
